Mary rode on Eva's shoulder, giving directions, until they came to the pool. Mary eagerly flitted over to the pool and dipped in, but came up still a fairy, spluttering and trying unsuccessfully to exit the pool with the extra weight of the water in her clothes and hair. Eventually, she gave up and simply swam to the pool's edge, climbed out, and attempted to shake the water out.
"I don't understand," Eva said. "I thought you said this pool would change you back to normal."
"I thought so too," Mary sighed. "I don't know what went wrong. Maybe wishes made with the amulet can't be reversed by any means. Or maybe my powers just prevent me from becoming a non-fairy. I don't know." She sighed. Would she really be stuck this way for life?
