Just as you gasp in horror at the implications, a thunderous noise erupts from behind you and Maya. You turn to see a troop of guards in armor that looks tougher than riot gear and more secure than hazmat suits, wearing heavy-duty helmets, and bearing military-grade arms flood in, guns raised and scanning the room for threats. While most of the guns are directed outward, a few cover you and Maya as well.
"Lieutenant, no threats observed but we have a breach!" one of the guards yells as most of the guards now direct their weapons towards the open vent, apart from the ones still trained on you and Maya.
"Sergeant, take a detail to escort these two to decontamination! The rest of you, we're locking down this entire wing!" The person in charge, who you assume to be the lieutenant, barks orders. The guards watching you indicate with the barrels of their guns for you and Maya to head towards the door, but Maya is still staring at the open vent.
"Hey..." you grab Maya by the arm, and for a moment, she doesn't react. Finally, she turns back to you, but her mind seems to be a million miles away. Without taking the time to ponder the reason for Maya's disconnect, you drag her along with you as the guards escort you back into the corridor. You pass through the observation room, where all that is left is the shambles after the catastrophe, but none of the people that were there before. More guards are passing through with additional equipment, presumably to track the escaped subject and contain it. You don't have time to look around, as the guards are urging you and Maya forward.
Finally, you come to an area that seems to be hermetically sealed with clear plastic, and you are shoved in through multiple flaps.
"Strip off your clothes and place them in the bin" you hear a voice say over an intercom. "Then stand facing the scanner with your legs apart and hands out to your sides. You will be inspected for any contaminants." While you are slightly uncomfortable with strutting around naked, you have been through emergency training before and understand the need to ensure no infected are allowed into the rest of the facility. Your skin must be examined for any evidence of abrasion and scanned for any wayward substances that could have come from the test subject. You suffer through the indignities and are finally allowed into the next chamber, where you are supplied with scrubs and guided towards a small opening in the large fortified lock-down door that has essentially cut off that wing of the facility.
As you are about to exit, you take one last look back, wondering how long Maya will take. You had no time to question her earlier, but once both of you are out, you really want to know just what the heck she was thinking, running in there like that. Speaking of which, you still don't know how she managed to get into the test chamber. Just then, something catches your attention.
