Maisy hastily dismissed the flaming portal before her girlfriend could see it and turned around to face her beloved. She desperately hoped she didn't look too flustered.
Rachel Church stepped into the apartment. Rachel was a wholesome-looking blonde-haired girl dressed in a sky blue blouse and a modestly cut lavender skirt, a far cry from the sexy, revealing outfits that her girlfriend Maisy always wore. Rachel sighed loudly as she walked through the door, sounding thoroughly drained.
"Welcome home, sweetie!" Maisy said brightly, trying to hide her nerves. "Did you have a rough day?"
"You can say that again!" Rachel groaned. "My dad called and gave me his usual garbage about how I'm 'living in sin' and how you're a 'conniving homosexual Jezebel' and all of that stuff. You know how it is. As far is he's concerned, you're Satan."
Rachel's father, Rev. Joshua Church, was a fiery Baptist pastor and a zealous defender of conservative values. He'd gone ballistic when he found out that Rachel was in a relationship with another girl and would periodically phone his daughter to rant about how she needed to kick Maisy out of her life. Maisy couldn't help but chuckle at how this was how scandalized the zealot got WITHOUT knowing about her infernal heritage.
"That's funny," Maisy said. "My own dad just called me. He's impatient to see me get married. Don't worry, he's not a homophobe. You're totally a valid option to him."
It was true. Maisy's father had initially been opposed to her marrying a human (though he'd since warmed up the the idea somewhat), but he never cared about Rachel's gender. To be honest, Heaven wasn't particularly homophobic either, no matter how hard preachers like Rev. Church tried to claim otherwise. Homophobia was one of those strange human things that Maisy had trouble wrapping her head around.
"That's a relief," Rachel chuckled dryly. "Good thing only one of us will have to deal with a bigoted father-in-law."
"Fair warning, my dad's pretty... intense," Maisy said. "He means well, but he's got super high standards for me and anyone I might marry."
"You said he's in politics, right?" Rachel said.
"That's right," Maisy nodded. "We Morgensterns are a pretty big deal, and Dad wants to make sure I bring the right person into the family. He's hoping to meet you soon. Like, really soon."
Maisy knew she needed to tell Rachel the truth. She needed to tell her girlfriend that her real name was Princess Miasma Morningstar, not Maisy Morgenstern (even if she did prefer to be called "Maisy" over "Princess Miasma"). She needed to tell Rachel that her father was Lucifer himself. She needed to show Rachel her true form as a demon princess. And, above all else, she needed to tell Rachel that the time had come to choose between becoming a demon and living with her in Hell or being destroyed. Oh well, no use putting it off any longer...
