On one warm day in July, a family of four: James Powers, his wife Bertha Powers and their twin boys Justin and Mike, both 10 years of age, arrive at their new home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Mike and Justin booth have short blond hair, a natural olive tan and athletic bodies, which they are really proud of.
“Okay, boy,” their father says, “remember: never tell anyone that you are powerful wizards. You really do NOT want that attention! Mortals are afraid of anything that is not in the bible and/or “not” normal, understood?”
“Yes, father,” the boys say.
“But it’s sooooo boring, being not aloud to use our powers,” Mike says, Justin agreeing with a nod, “why do we have these powers, if we will never be using them?”
Their father sighs, “I know, it is very frustration, but that is the law,” he says, “we are only aloud to use our powers in the magic dimension. As long as we are in the human dimension: NO magic! The elders won’t be looking away, just because some rebellious kids decide to “spice things up”! You really don’t want to feel their wrath!”
“Okay, okay,” the boys say, throwing up their hands, “we promise to behave!”
James smiles at his boys, “that is all I need to hear,” he says.
True to their word, the boys behave, the whole family quickly settles in, and the boys try their best to act like “normal” kids, which they surprisingly manage to do.
A few weeks go by without any troubles, that is until on one weekend about two months after moving in.
The parents are sitting in the dining room with the boys, “listen closely, your mother and I are planning to go on a two week vacation,” James says.
“WHAT,” the boys shout, “WITHOUT US? WHY?”
“Because, we really could use a break from everything, even parenthood,” Bertha says, “we both are just really stressed out, we need these two weeks for ourselves”.
“So… what is going to happen with us,” Justin asks, both boys look at each other, both already knowing what must be coming.
“Well, you will have someone watching over you for two weeks,” their dad says.
“We knew it,” the boys say, “really? We are old enough to take care of ourselves!”
“YOU might think that,” the mother says, “but WE don’t! We KNOW that you’d just start causing trouble and chaos! We really don’t want to deal with the elders! So… you two will have to deal with a babysitter until we return!”
“Booo… no fair,” Justin says.
“Listen boys,” James says, “if you go through with this and behave: we promise that we’ll reward you!”
THIS has both boys perk up, “hu? Like… what?”
The parents smile, “well, we know that it is not easy for you to make friends,” their father says, “actually, you have no friends and we noticed that it is starting to affect you both”.
“No shit,” Mike mumbles.
“Watch it, young man,” their mother says warningly.
“S-sorry,” Mike says.
“As I was saying,” their father continues, “seeing you suffer under the loneliness, we decided, IF you behave yourselves: you both will get a dog EACH!”
The boys jaws drop and their eyes widen, “th-that’ll be AWESOME!”
“For THAT we most certainly behave,” Justin says, “no funny stuff, we promise!”
“I already forgotten that I have magic powers,” Mike adds.
“Make that both of us,” Justin pipes in, “wizards? US!? Pfff… nope, magic only exist in fairy tales!”
They all laugh, “well, I think that is a deal,” the father says.
“Would you prefer a boy or girl to watch over you,” the mother then asks.
The two boys look at each other, “girls are annoying,” Mike says.
Justin nods, “true, but boys, especially older boys, LOVE to show off,” he says.
“Well… better decide,” Bertha says.
“Or WE will decide for you,” James adds.
“Hey…,” Mike says, “don’t rush us!”
The parents chuckle, “okay fine,” they say.
After a while of giving it a thought, the boys look at their parents, “we have decided,” Justin says.
“We would like to be watched over by a…”.
