Puck was feeling the heady triumph of using powerful magic and grinned at what had been the doomed salamander's twin brother. Identical twin? Yes! As comprehension dawned ion the boy's eyes and he lurched forward to try saving what he now realized was his brother, the fairy struck with another transformation. Ronnie fell over, confused and disoriented as his body shrank. The snake was finishing swallowing what had been Robbie, and as Ronnie continued to shrink and change he recognized the pale, damp skin of his body.
His mind started to close in as his head shrank, no longer able to contain human identity and memory. Ronnie was mostly changed to a salamander almost identical to the one that had been his brother, and the snake was not yet satisfied. Terror filled Ronnie's mind as he twisted and squirmed to get away, find safety in the river and the mud. But the snake was faster and far larger, and the salamander felt jaws close around its lower body. It squirmed helplessly as it was forced deeper into the snake's mouth, until the jaws closed over its head and it was inside.
Puck sighed as the snake started to slither towards a gap so it could escape. Actual death was not really encouraged when performing transformations, though it was fine later on as part of the natural order of things. With a flick of one hand, the two salamanders appeared, healed of damage but still terrified. A quick check had Puck grinning again - one was male the other female, so the former brothers would now be helping increase the lake's population of salamanders. Another flick of his fingers and the two pale, squirming forms were safe in the muddy bank of the nearby river. Perhaps snakes would find them again, but for now the former humans were healthy normal salamanders with no memory of ever being anything else.
