The rest of the unicorn mares shivered in anticipation as Harmonia and Themis looked them over. Already, they could feel the effects of their queens' influence. Their stallion's thoughts broadcasted more clearly through their minds, and the herd's magical capacity received an overall boost. Also, the increased chances of birthing twins was shared by all the harem, yet another benefit of twin queens.
Now, however, it was time to see who would be chosen as betas. The stallion deliberated with his queens, all agreeing that two betas would suffice until they procured more mares. They perceived that the candidates for beta were split between magic with Lyssa, Nyx, and Eos and athleticism with Hybris and Ioke. So, whoever remained in the harem would determine the focus of the herd for now.
For a new herd, magic was most important for protection. So, Ioke and Hybris were chosen to be the betas. Perhaps later, when things were more safe for the herd, they could then be bred. Besides, Hybris's loyalty and athleticism made her an ideal protector, as did Ioke's aggressive tendencies.
Calling them forward, the stallion magically adjusted them to their new roles. Their horns grew longer and sharper to become better weapons while their senses became more acute to detect danger. They also gained innate shape-shifting abilities to disguise themselves when needed.
Immediately, the two unicorn mares transformed into deer and headed out for a patrol.
With the hierarchy now complete, Harmonia and Themis turned to their stallion. "Well, my love, what shall we do now?"
The stallion considered his options. There was still the rest of the human village to take care of, merely a collection of farms and shops. Since the two humans that got away had fled in the other direction, it was probably still unaware of his presence.
Speaking of the two escapees, he probably ought to hunt them down before they alerted half the countryside. Traveling on their pathetic two legs, they could not have gotten far. In addition, he was impressed that of one of them had outrun his bubble. Adding her to his herd would be a great benefit.
Of course, he could also stay put and breed his queens. Or his harem. Or both. It would delay things a bit, but pregnant mares got yet another boost in magic as their unborn foals' magic was added to their own. With a twin pregnancy, a mare's magic level could even triple!
