Emily groaned and placed her head down on her desk. She just didn’t understand math, no matter how hard she tried. It was like the questions were written in a foreign language. Actually, it might have been easier if they really had been written in a foreign language, Emily thought; then she could just alter her own mind to understand it.
Okay, she had this down. She knew this question. She had gone over it in class, it was in her notes. She just needed to—
The sounds of loud laughter and video game noises echoed from across the hall, completely derailing Emily’s train of thought. The answer, which had been right there a second ago, was completely gone. Letting out a hiss of pure fury Emily stormed across the hall.
Her younger brother Aaron was laughing and joking as he played some video game in his room, a couple of his friends lounging around making fun of his skills, or lack there of. Emily threw the door wide open. “Aaron, I asked you three times to keep it down!” She complained. “Mom told you too! I need to study if I want to pass this test!”
Aaron rolled his eyes. “You’ll probably just flunk it anyway.” He sneered. “Besides, mom said I could show Connor and Jake my new game anyway, and we totally weren’t be loud anyway.” He added, smirking at her. Emily saw red.
FLASH
A few hours later, Emily sat on the couch in the living, watching TV. She’d finally managed to figure out the answer she’d kept getting wrong, and had headed down to relax for a bit. It was all nice and very quiet—
Her mother stormed into the room.
“Emily.” She said calmly. “Why are there three little girls wearing Disney Princess dresses and playing with Barbies in what was your brother’s room?”
“Aaron was being a jerk and wouldn’t let me study, so I decided Erin would have more fun with her friends Chloe and Jenny on a playdate.” Emily replied. At her mother’s stern look she groaned. “Ugh, fine, I’ll change them back.”
She trudged up the stairs to “Erin”’s room. Her “sister” was wearing a Cinderella dress, playing with a brunette girl in a yellow Belle dress and a blonde girl wearing a pink Aurora dress. All three girls still seemed fixated on the dolls they’d been happily playing with.
FLASH
Aaron and his friends seemed dazed, unsure why they were sitting on the floor near some of Aaron’s old GI Joe action figures. They clearly had no memory of having spent the last couple hours as girls. The video game controller sat, off to the side, the game paused. Emily turned on her heel and left before the boys could say anything, ready to head back down and watch some more TV. A smile slowly crept across her face, as she considered the next time she might turn her annoying brother into her little sister…..
