Breaking News on Aeaea

added by Alphagor A year ago O

"Hey, everyone, welcome to Animalia Ambassadoria. I'm Miles and I'm coming to you live from the new Animalian colony of Aeaea. That's a-EE-a." A small subtitle prompt helped viewers with pronouncing the island's strange name. "I'm sure some of you are asking why we gave this colony a name that has no consonants in it. No, it's not a Hawaiian name, though apparently there's a Hawaiian word for a small green fish that's spelled the same way. No, the colony's name derives from the mythical island of Aeaea, the home of legendary sorceress Circe."

At this point, the camera spun around to a Greek island. It was fairly rocky in some spots, but there were still plenty of green acres to be seen. Atop a tall hill was a large mansion of the ancient Greek style. "That, up there, is the House of Circe, which is also the main hotel and Horizon Labs facility on this island. Don't worry, you don't have to be on your best behavior to avoid being turned into a pig. Unless you want to be a pig. You're free to become whatever kind of Animalian you want to be, as long as it's not mythical or an invertebrate."

After a short walk, the camera showed an outdoor amphitheater of the classical Greek style. "Of course, no Greek settlement would be complete without an outdoor amphitheater. This is the place where plays and performances will be done. Though, this isn't the only place for entertainment. For indoors entertainment-"

Just then, there was a sudden commotion and the camera spun around to look at a lad in swim trunks. He was exclaiming excitedly about something. It was rather hard to understand what he was saying because he was speaking in a foreign language, French to be exact. Miles hurried over to the boy and asked, "Excusez-moi, que se passe-t-il?" He was learning French in high school, but he was a little shaky in using it. The boy quickly explained it to him. "Wait, wait, slow down, you were swimming along the shore and found...metal cookies with funny ears?" asked Miles.

"Actually, I think he means 'biscuits'." Miles turned the camera to look at Eloise. "You did rather good with your French for the most part," she said.

"I take it you know this young man," said Miles.

"Jean is one of our newest students," said Eloise, "One of several students Miss Juliet allowed to come here for summer vacation."

"So these metal biscuits, you don't suppose he's found sunken treasure, do you?" asked Miles.

"I think that may be," said Eloise, "Though Jean wouldn't have seen many coins to know what they would be."

"We probably ought to tell the archaeologists," said Miles.

"Oh, they've already been told," said Eloise, "Jean was just telling me now what he found after he told them."

"Then we better head down to the shore to see what they've found," said Miles before turning to Jean, "Pourriez-vous nous montrer oł vous nagez?" Jean nodded before heading towards the beach. "How was that?" asked Miles.

"You need to work a little on enunciation," said Eloise.

One of the benefits of being a rabbit (technically hare in Miles's case) was that they could run really fast. It was easier for Eloise to pick up Jean and for him to point where he was swimming. The three of them made it down to the beach just as the archaeologists came out of the surf in wetsuits. "Excuse me," panted Miles, "But did you find-"

"Treasure? Certainly," said one of the archaeologists, holding out a hand that held several ancient-looking coins. They were probably bronze or brass, but they were so covered in green tarnish it was hard to tell.

"What's more, there's a sunken ship down there," said the other archaeologist.

"Really? How old is it?" asked Eloise.

"We can't say for sure right now, but judging by the little we could see of it and the make of these coins, my first guess may be somewhere around the late Bronze Age," said the first archaeologist, "That'd be about...1200 BC, give or take."

"Wow, 3000-year-old treasure," said Miles, "What are the odds of that?"

"Not as remote as you might think," said the second archaeologist, "What we've uncovered at the ruins suggested that this island was a small trading port, more of a pit stop than a major hub. It's quite likely that a storm ended up sinking this ship when it was not too far from the harbor."

"Which means this island is definitely a bigger archaeological discovery than we previously thought," said the first archaeologist, "We'll definitely need to set up a permanent place to study these finds."

"Hmm, it looks like there's going to be more going on here than I thought," said Miles before turning to the camera, "We'll have to pause the official tour of Aeaea for a while until they've finished investigating. But we'll be coming back to you soon with more information. Please keep an eye out for it and we'll see you later in the wilds of Animalia."
