"Are you ready?" asked Susan.
"Yes, I am ready." answered Janet.
"It feels weird to know that this is the last time I'll see you as a woman."
"It is weird. It'll still be me, though. You don't get a whole new personality implant."
"But, hormones. . ."
"Yeah. But it's not like I'll be an eighteen-year old jock asshole."

(Five years earlier, on Earth)
"Ms. McCloskey, we'd like to invite you to be part of the phase two program."
"Does that mean what I think it means?"
The man gave a dry chuckle. "If what you think it means is that I am inviting you to be part of the masculinization contingent, then yes."
"Why me? Not like I'm trans."
"Not what we're looking for. We're looking for people like you, whose identity isn't based on gender. You would have the least difficulty transitioning because your identity isn't fundamentally rooted in your gender."
Janet thought for a moment. Would having a male body really make a difference to her?
"What if I say no?"
"We'd be disappointed, but we have enough backups." But I don't think you will say no, the man thought to himself.
Janet smiled. Like everyone else on the expedition she was bisexual. What would it be like, to have a male body, to make love to a woman with it, to impregnate her, to be a father?
"Yes."
"Excellent."
