You are dead.
You discorporate from your wolf body. You look down in sadness at your mangled body, knowing there was no way you could survive.
Your soul flies through the woods, back to your mate and children. They know you are gone. But they know you are there with them. They look at you. You speak to them in a way more profound than words could ever be. It is only at this moment that you realize how much of a wolf you really are, and how much you long to feel the touch of your mate again, to run with your pups beneath the moon.
You will see them again. In the spirit world. You will run free with them, the pain you feel now will then be forgotten.
You reach out for her with your soul. Your mate, your beautiful mate. But you pass through her. You cannot touch her. You can only look at her longingly, so very close. So very far.
The heavens part and the spirit world calls you. You must go now. You rise mournfully into the heavens.
Below, beneath the moon, a lonely wolf and her two cubs howl mournfully to the night. In their sorrowful howls, you can hear the truth that they know.
