Andrew experiments with way too realistic virtual immersion of giants and shrunken guys
So many choices of video games, it’s almost impossible to try them all. Andrew already has lots of games at home, but being in that almost old-fashioned arcade is a totally different experience. It’s a little like comparing watching a movie at home with seeing it in a cinema. The immersion is definitively not the same.
One particular game at The All Time Arcade puzzled him much more though. It’s the one titled Giants and shrunken guys. He reads the basic documentation about it, but not everything though, who does anyway. No one really understands how it works, but there are theories about photons imaging projection confined in a force field. So no need for a helmet or 3D viewer glasses to wear, not even motion captures gloves or suit. Many nerds who tried it, think it’s a supercomputer that has lots of cameras that capture anything inside a room and thousands of images are analyzed by artificial intelligence. So when inside, the players’ movements are parts of the actions and controls.
To play the game, Andrew had to wait in line because there were several other boys who wanted to try it. So one by one, they entered a booth that leads to a corridor. When it was his turn, he saw that it was one of the most expensive ones, it almost took all his remaining credits on his gaming card. “It better to worth it”, he whispered.
Then he heard the narrative:
[Welcome to the land of giants and tiny people. If you are a giant, you are part of a ruling society that has very little regard for tiny people. They are like invaders and pests, and they are thieves. If you are one of those tiny people, your perception is way different. You have not chosen to be in a land of giants, you arrived by accident when you passed through some kind of rift between your own world and theirs. You were in a small plane with other boys when a very strange energy storm opened the rift. The pilot managed to do an emergency landing. All you want is to survive, not be captured and try to go back you your world.]
Andrew makes his choice, he plays as:
