So... being invited to your girlfriend's family may seem like she wants to be serious, she trusts you, and you may get a stern talking to from her dad... You get a more creeping dread that you may be in more trouble than usual as most likely... her whole family probably has some affinity for witch-like arts, and worst of all... She invited your 8 year old little sister as well so now if SHE does anything the both of you are probably going to be turned into toads or something.
While Wendy is pretty acclimatized to American culture her house is more asian looking, like how past the front gate there's a rock garden with bamboo and koi in a nice pond... As you go for the buzzer you can see someone throwing something out the front door and they smile and say "Ah Carl was it? Come on in Come on in!" It looked like an old granny, and if stereotypes told you anything... It was to not piss off a grandma witch so you hurried in to find a lot of Wendy's extended family inside... Meaning a lot of people to shake hands with, and a lot of names you'd probably never be able to remember. It was easy to find Wendy and for a change of pace she was wearing a kimono. She usually wore shorts and a shirt, but it was nice to see her in something more traditional once in awhile. She held a box that had some sorta...
"They're roasted soybeans. Eat some it's traditional." Wendy ordered and your little sis grabbed a bunch and chomped on some. You chuckled a bit with a grin that tried to say you were sorry your little sister was rude, but Wendy had a smile on her face that made you a little less trustworthy of the beans... To be safe in case there was a spell on them you just grabbed and popped 3 small beans in your mouth... and then there was a sharp pain in your leg as Wendy's grandma smacked you in the leg with a walking stick.
"Big boy should eat more!"
Wendy smiled and said "Now don't push something on him. He can eat as much or as little as he wants." before popping 3 in her mouth as well. "Also we have actual snacks as well. you don't want to eat too many of the beans. The rest of the night was pretty nice. There was a little too much anime on the TV, but it was a good party with a lot of good food. The beans were put away or all thrown outside in the yard with the rock garden pebbles. Sitting on the couch next to wendy you sighed as what felt like a food coma was beginning to set in. Wendy's family didn't mind you snuggling a bit with her... and then your little sister came up.
"Um... Wendy, did your food have any... Unorthodox ingredients... I think I may be having an allergic reaction." she said which made you look at her for any swelling and... Well the girl who wasn't old enough for a training bra certainly needed one now... and her clothes were a bit small as they were starting to show off some skin.
Wendy waved her hand and said "Eh... You just ate a few too many beans."
You glared at her "The heck is that supposed to mean?"
Wendy gave you a look and said "I told you we'd be doing Setsubun, there's only like 2 things about the tradition. Throw beans at an Oni or out of the house, and eating as many beans as you are years old."
"...wait... so..." you looked at your long sleeve shirt and noted your hands were shrinking into the sleeve. relatively slowly but...
Wendy gripped you by your collar as you tried to run off and said "Too late! And also don't try to eat the beans off the ground! They're filled with bad luck and probably a lot of bacteria!" Your little sister looked a bit pale trying to think how many beans were in her small handful.
"I'm going to be 3! How many did you eat?"
"3, thought I'd have fun matching you this year." she was also shrinking a bit, "I always matched your natural aging, but thought it'd be nice to invite you two over. and don't worry about what everyone else will think. Reality changes a bit thanks to this being a family thing that pools together all sorts of magic crap." Your sister was clutching her chest though as it was becoming a little too big "Although you may want to borrow some clothes or something till the reality changes come in..."
