After settling into her room Melanie made her way back down stairs and joined Beth in the living room and attempted to make conversation with Beth. Curious about the person she would be living with for the forseeable future indulged her for a while but it soon became clear the pair had next to nothing in common . Melanie - or Mel as she apparently preferred to be referred to - seemed to possess all the qualities that bored Beth the most. She was pleasant, polite, a little timid, seemed to giggle a lot for no obvious reason other than maybe nerves and stuck to bland and uncontroversial subjects. As Mel talked about her love of guinea pigs, which contestant she was supporting on a singing show and a popular band she had tickets to watch next month it was clear to Beth that any fun she had with her new roommate she would have to make herself.
Melanie, for her part. was somewhat uncomfortable with Beth's unfriendly demeanor and unwisely decided to attempt to get to know her new roommate better.
"So, what are those?" Melanie nodded towards the tomes she had noted on her entrance "They look like spell books!"
"They are" Beth responded bluntly.
Melanie giggled, assuming this was a joke.
"What's funny?" Beth bristled.
"Sorry, I thought you were joking" Catherine answered, a little confused now.
"I'm a witch. Do you think magic is a joke?" Beth hissed.
"No, it's just that, well, I mean obviously I don't believe you have magic powers or anything like that" Melanie stumbled over her words clumsily.
"Right. Well then you won't have any objection to me putting a spell on you then?"
