Having been turned into a mouse and trapped in a pickle jar by her new witch housemate, Melanie realised her least bad option was to stay where she was and wait for Beth to return. As scary demeaning as her current predicament was Melanie was smart enough to know that if she tried to escape and got caught it would only make a powerful witch even madder at her. And if she did escape then what? Live the rest of her life as a talking mouse? She needed Beth to turn her back before she could go anywhere. She wasn't sure how she and the witch had got off to such a bad start but she hoped she could talk her around. Maybe they would even become friends and one day they would laugh about this. It would be pretty cool to be friends with a witch.
Melanie stared out of her glass home, she was getting used to the pickle smell by now, and looked in amazement at how big everything was in comparison to her. She was sure even if she did escape she couldn't survive for long at her present size. She felt so tiny and vulnerable. Just then, as if from nowhere a giant black beast leapt out and landed on the table in front of Melanie, bearing down ominously on the frightened little mouse. It was a regular sized black cat, but to Melanie it was the size of an elephant if she were still human. To her surprise, the cat spoke.
"Well, well. Looks like Mistress Beth left me a snack! How thoughtful of her!"
"Please don't eat me!" Melanie begged in her pathetic squeaky voice "I'm not really a mouse!"
The cat paused for a moment then let out a hearty laugh "Wait, you're the new girl? Wow, it didn't take long for you to get on Beth's bad side."
"I don't know what I did wrong" Melanie admitted "I'm waiting for her to come back so I can apologise for upsetting her earlier. I'm hoping she will turn me back and we can maybe even become friends."
"Oh that's so boring!" the cat swung it's tail and Melanie felt herself hurtling off the table towards the floor where the pickle jar smashed, freeing the trapped mouse "I'm going to tell Beth you tried to escape. She hates it when people, or mice in this case, defy her. It is about time I got to see some quality entertainment around here."
