Spark glanced down at the egg in his claws as he flew back towards his cave. Perhaps he had overdone things a bit. His attention had been split between guiding the regression spell and wiping the dragoness's memories. Before he realized it, she was nothing more than an egg exactly like the one she had just cared for.
Oh well. What was done was done. His precious wife was now his precious daughter. He was a single father now. However, he did not mean to stay that way.
Despite her unexpected lapse in sanity, his beloved had cared for the previous egg with perfect motherly attention. The health of the hatchling was testament to that. It would only be right that she receive the same care that she provided. Sadly, he could not provide such care on his own, and this late in the breeding season, he was not likely to find a suitable female in time.
This was where Bluefire came in.
Landing in front of a decent-sized cave, he called out, "Bluefire! It is I, Spark!"
Soon, an azure colored dragon of similar size and age to Spark came galloping out to greet him. "Spark! What brings you here?" He asked eagerly.
Seeing his excitement, Spark suppressed a feeling of guilt. "I'm assuming you still haven't found a mate."
The azure dragon ducked his head at the embarrassing reminder. "Yes. But that is not so rare for young dragons like us. It is only our first breeding season, and there is always next year. I am sure we'll both find mates then."
"Um, well," Spark coughed before presenting the egg. "I was lucky, this year. There is a hatchling waiting back at my cave as well."
"Oh," Bluefire replied, utterly deflated. "Congratulations, Spark. I'm assuming she is beautiful."
"Very," Spark nodded. "But due to unfortunate circumstances, she is no longer my mate. Therefore, I am in need of help to care for this egg."
Bluefire digested this information. Eyes flashing coldly, he deduced, "So, you need an egg-sitter, and there were no available females. You then thought to ask me, a single dragon with nothing better to do."
Turning away, he headed back to his cave. "I am not a female, Spark. I have no knowledge or instincts for nesting and hatching. Sorry for your predicament, but that is not my problem."
"Wait, please!" Spark said. To his relief, the other dragon stopped, so he pressed on. "I apologize, but this is a misunderstanding. I do not merely need an egg-sitter but a mate. You have always been nice to me, Bluefire, and I've come to appreciate that. Will you be my mate?"
Still not turning around, Bluefire spoke softly. "I am a dragon, not a dragoness. Is that not a problem?"
"Not exactly," Spark answered. Now for the bigger request. "I know you have considerable magical talent, far better than mine. So, here is what I was thinking..."
