“You said you have a breakthrough?” inquired a marine captain as he looked toward one of the handful of scientists which was under his command.
“Yes.” Confirmed the scientist “It could save humanity.”
“Thank God.” said the aid to the Marine Captain, like the captain his uniform was dirty and worn. It was actually common now given how few of them there was.
The furry virus had started to spread rapidly across the world about five years ago and nothing seemed able to stop them. It wasn’t that the humans transformed into half human half animal creatures couldn’t be killed, the problem was that it was extremely hard to kill. A “normal” cat person could be taken down only with focus fire from a machine gun or a squad turning all their rifles on it. However an elephant or rhino furry could shrug off shells from main battle tanks. While a common furry could rip the door off a Humvee and had abilities no human could match.
In the end everyone was pushed back into hidden bunkers and positions around the world. No one dared to use radio to keep in touch because to everyone surprise those who where transformed kept some of their abilities to use human technology. It wasn’t uncommon for a turned police officer to listen on their radio and ambush none turned humans.
“So you have a cure?” inquired the Captain, he had been placed in command of this old cold war era bunker which had some scientists, a handful of marines and a some civilians which had been “drafted” into the defense of the bunker. The bunker had been one built during the cold war and had been deactivated after the fall of the Soviet Union, they had rushed to get it back up and running when the furry virus overwhelmed the governments of the world. They had stocked up on food, water, fuel and some scientifical equipment but after five years the stocks were reaching critical low levels.
“In a way.” Said the scientist “I have the blueprints for a cure which should work in returning everyone to humanity.”
“But…” started the captain, he knew where this was going.
“We need a sample from someone who was among the 1st generation to be turned, the closest we get to the originally virus the better the cure works.” Stated the scientist “Basically I need a blood sample from a furry from the main outbreak epicenter.”
“That is almost across the entire country, the 1st major outbreak was in New York State.” stated the Captain as he looked up at the concrete ceiling, he knew far above was the surface which was now under the control of those who had succumb to the furry virus. “I can’t send anyone out there, they would become one of them before they get a couple miles away from here.”
“Then turn them here.” Stated the scientist as the Captain blinked.
“I managed to find a way which should allow us to transform a handful of people but allow them to keep their human mind.” Stated the scientist “They can walk out the door and get the blood sample and come back here so that we can cure everyone.”
“You want us to transform some people and send them out there?” inquired the Marine Aid
“Yes, it may be our only way to save humanity.” Stated the Scientist. “We can transform them and they should keep their human mind and pass unnoticed by those already infected.”
“Should?” inquired the Captain.
“Nothing is 100% for sure, they should keep their human minds but there is a risk they could be just like any other infected or they could keep their human minds but over time they could loss that and be nothing more then infected.” Stated the Scientists as he looked at the Marine captain and his aid. “What choice do we really have?”
