"... scientists and DON'T go in the basement lab!" Prof. Burnett told me. "Okay, professor. Are you making some new tech or working on some strange formula?" Prof. Burnett just guffawed at my guesses. "No, no. Nothing of the sort. It's a prototype of a VR game that me and the missus are making for the kiddies. I haven't worked out the kinks out of it. But when it is finished, I'll let you have a go at it." After that, Prof. and Mrs. Burnett left the house to attend a science award ceremony.
The thought of playing a VR game really got to me. Back home, my built PC is filled with games that I spent hours in. The saddest thing about it is that in order to play even more games, I need some quick money. So it is very fortunate that the Burnetts were looking for a babysitter for their kids. After a quick introduction, Billy dragged me toward the whopping 110-inch TV screen and got it ready for their video game.
After playing with the kids for over an hour, I went to the kitchen to whip up some dinner that Mrs. Burnett left out for us. Once the two kids were fed and got ready for bed, I said good night to them and then made my way to the basement lab that the professor told me not to.
I know I said that I wouldn't go in, but the idea of playing a brand-new VR game sounds too good to be true.
You know, for such major award-winning scientists, the Burnett doesn't have much security over the basement door. Just a sign saying, "WARNING: DO NOT ENTER!!" and a simple door knob with a privacy lock. But when I stepped foot into the lab, it was like in a science-fiction movie. There was steel plating on the walls and glass tubes filled with various stuff going this way and that. And at the center of all the wonderful tech in the lab is a platform that has something that looks like a VR headset and gloves.
I rushed toward the platform and began to check it out. A once-over of the gear does show that it is the VR that the professor was talking about earlier. The helm completely covers the player's head and the gauntlets as well for my hands. There was also a spot on the platform for my feet to step in. When I stepped into the marked area, the lights on the platform turned on and then dimmed a little, like it was taunting me to play a game. I put on the set and turned it on to see if there were any games for me to play. How was I supposed to know that one of the many bugs that Prof. Burnett was talking about was that there was a locking mechanism in the gear that could only be unlocked from the outside.
But for now, I was enraptured by the hard work that the professor had done. I can no longer see the laboratory walls or even hear the pipes and tubes rushing about. What I do see is the title, "Hype-VR", floating in front of me and the sounds of dynamic music surrounding me. Without any loading screen, the VR headset took me to the main menu, and I could see some of the popular games that are also in my VR library and some new ones as well.
I am very curious about the new games that the professor has put in here, so I pressed the virtual button of one of the games with the title...
