Now that I was clean, Mom patted me on the butt and encouraged me to go to the kitchen and get breakfast, not bothering to put my pyjama pants back over the top.
I was a little embarrassed for that — after all, my dad hadn’t seen me in diapers for years, and my little brother never had… but this was my new normal.
I did what I was told and headed to the kitchen, running up to Dad and hugging him before sitting at the table. There was already a plate in my spot with a tall glass of juice.
“Feeling better, Champ?” Dad asked, winking at me. I didn’t know if he meant because of the nightmare or the diaper change, but either way I nodded enthusiastically.
“I feel great,” I confirmed, and started digging in. Pancakes were one of my favourites.
Conversation turned to the day ahead. Dad was going to work, Mom, who had come back in to keep making more pancakes, was working from home, and Matt was going to school.
I didn’t know what my new situation was, so I waited for one of my parents to confirm.
“And Jon, your bus for daycare will be here at around eight,” Mum said, “so you’ll have to go get dressed soon.”
Daycare? Not school? You looked at her inquiringly. “I’m not going to school?” You asked to confirm.
“Oh, sorry, your ‘school’ bus will be here around eight,” She laughed, obviously thinking you were joking.
“Don’t be stupid,” Matt laughed at you, “you’re in daycare because of the diapers. They won’t let you at the proper school when you can’t even make it a day dry,”
