Lizzie was taken away by the policemen but of course, once at the police station, nothing about her turned up. This was normal, as she couldn't tell her family name and her babble was that of a toddler, thus near unintelligible. Moreover, her own self was an adult so no wonder she showed in absolutely no database or kidnapping files. Or any fine at all indeed. Not knowing what to do, the policemen filed her description and sent her to an orphanage. There, a poor sad Lizzie was washed, fed and put in a crib, amongst other babies and toddlers. There were very few children around, which was reassuring. Many families wanted to adopt so hopefully it would happen to her soon. AND she was a toddler, so made quite desirable, as she could be raised for sure the way her new parents wanted her to be. Probably in their own image, though. Ugh... She did fall asleep fast.
A few days later, Lizzie, playing absent-mindedly with a doll, caught a conversation between two workers. Apparently her profile had been deemed attractive enough to a prospective couple, except a certain "Alex" in the couple was snobbish and judgmental. It was his partner who truly wanted to adopt. So Lizzie was washed thoroughly, scrubbed and put in a frilly white dress with bows everywhere, white socks and a large pink bow in her hair. Everything was made to please this "Alex", some sort of French snob, and thus get rid of Lizzie. And with the bow in her hair, Lizzie thought she looked like a human version of Marie from the "Aristocats". Rather appropriate for this Alex, then, if Lizzie was honest with herself.
Luckily, his companion was very different. Because it was a male gay couple, which Lizzie was fine with, as long as they were good parents. Except Alex made no doubt that he wasn't very enthusiastic at the idea of a child in his home. It was his muscled partner, who was a big bear, a teddy bear that is, who was a great happy guy, already with an infant boy in a baby sling across his chest, who was sleeping soundly. His name was Will, and he gushed at how cute Lizzie was, turning to Alex for confirmation. Alex looked bored and agreed curtly, looking to be rid of the adoption procedure and please his husband. He wanted the chore over with and be gone. The worker wanted get rid of Lizzie. One less to look after. So the papers were signed, Lizzie's name changed to Marie, as it was Alex's mother's name and they left, Will hugging Lizzie, now Marie and cuddling and cooing at her, flooding her with sweet words and love. Her new little brother's name was Glaucus, Alex's idea again, from the boy's pale green-blue eyes. It seemed Alex had the final word on names and taste, in this household. Marie was then strapped to a seat, Will overly happy, Glaucus still dozing and Alex grumbling that they should go home fast as he still had a lot of work to do. Marie did wonder what this new home would look like.
