That's when Brendon heard a knock at his door. That was odd. He wasn't expecting anyone. His friends would be met by him the next day at school, and he had no girlfriend, much to his chagrin.
"Come in," he said.
In truth, he was expecting his mother coming in with laundry or entering the room to ask him something, but it was Jenny who came in. His little sister.
"Can I stay?" she asked in a small voice.
"Uh... sure," said Brendon.
"Mom and Dad are fighting," she said as way of explanation.
"Again," mumbled Brendon.
Indeed he could hear shouts from downstairs. Who knew what the topic of the fight was. Probably nothing, and probably their dad was kicking up a fuss for nothing at all, as usual. Brendon hated it when his parents fought, and that happened too often. Yet however bad it was for him, he knew that it was worse for Jenny, who felt it deeper, much deeper, than she let on. Brendon had to make her feel better and too often, he was at a loss as to how to do that. How could he make sure he reassured her to the best of his abilities? Too often he felt inadequate. He always strived to be the best big brother, the sort that ensured nothing bad befell his little sister, but he constantly wished he could do more and wasn't stuck with so few means. The number of times Jenny had slipped under his sheets when their parents yelled at each other in the middle of the night...
"Yeah, you can stay," he said with a sad smile.
"Thanks," she said, bringing her toys.
After playing a bit, the seven-year-old spoke again.
"I wish we had a better mom and dad."
"Yeah, that's my wish too," sighed Brendon. "To have way better parents. And to be rich. And to have a better family life, while I'm at it."
Beldazar had heard too. That made three wishes! His job was cut out for him! And frankly, he felt sorry for the two kids. They clearly deserved better. So he made sure his magic would make their lives a lot more pleasant. He had the power to do so and magic to achieve this. He might be a little mischievous in his interpretation of the wish, but hey, he'd be naughty another time, with another master.
