As the days passed by, Bluefire and Spark both grew larger and larger. It was evident that both were pregnant with more than one egg. In fact, Bluefire was sure she was carrying even more eggs than she had the first time. One day, while Dartwing played with the hatchlings, Bluefire and Spark discussed the issue at hand.
“Caring for eggs and rearing hatchlings is the job of a dragoness,” Spark fretted. “But we are a mere two! We could never tend to the enormous number of eggs and hatchlings that will soon be our responsibility.” Bluefire nuzzled her mate reassuringly.
“Relax, my love.” There was a vicious, clever glint in her eye. “I know what to do.”
“What?”
“I may be unable to kick Dartwing out of our home or hurt him, but I can do other things to him. Such as making him a her,” Bluefire said slyly. Spark gasped.
“Did you plan this when you realized you imprinted upon him?”
“Not exactly. I knew that there had to be some way to get around the imprint, but I wanted to wait to come up with something.” Bluefire chuckled. “I do not know if turning Dartwing into a dragoness will get around my imprint. But it will certainly give him a taste of his own medicine and provide the extra claws we need to tend to our offspring.” Spark nodded.
“What do I need to do?” she asked.
“Bring Dartwing to me. I will handle the rest,” Bluefire said. Spark smirked. She left the nest and headed for the cavern that Dartwing had been playing with the hatchlings in. She informed Dartwing that Bluefire needed him.
Not ten minutes later, an incredibly small, silver dragoness came into the cavern. Spark smiled.
“Hello, Dartwing,” she purred. The newly female Dartwing blushed. “I am so glad that you will be able to help with the eggs and hatchlings now. Bluefire and I were so worried.” Dartwing mumbled something under her breath. “Would you like to play with the hatchlings some more? I will help Bluefire with the eggs.” Dartwing nodded jerkily.
Spark left the cavern and returned to the nest. She curled up with Bluefire.
“Excellent work, my love,” Spark purred. Bluefire chuckled.
“I had to think of some way to get back at the brat.”
