After all of the changes to this world there was one person who remembered everything that happened and what the world once was. Kai was mortified at the changes to the work around them. Their blue wolf cut was now its original brown and tied into an 1800s poof, their gender neutral clothing was now replaced with a constricting old fashioned, modest dress, its high collar practically choking them. They tried to run to a mirror and almost tripped on the long dress and heeled shoes. Looking into the mirror Kai was upset to see their makeup and piercings were gone and their face made up with more subtle but feminine makeup.
“Rachel! What the hell happened to me! Why am I dressed like a girl!?” Kai screamed at their mother.
Their mom was also now dressed in old fashioned conservative clothing as well, she looked at them confused and slightly upset.
“What has gotten into you? First, you do not call your mother by her first name, young lady. Second, you are a woman Annabelle, you always dress like this.” She explained.
“Uh—yea, I must be feeling ill. I’m sure it will pass.” Kai said, wincing at their mother’s use of their birth name.
They didn’t want to press their mother on these changes, from what they could remember everything about the world had suddenly changed. The last thing they wanted was to draw more attention to themselves, even if that meant keeping a low profile and going along with being considered a woman again. As Kai walked to leave the house they were mortified to learn that their family seemed to have slaves, their previous black neighbor, Rita, was now wearing a maid’s uniform and seemed blissfully content with scrubbing the floors. The whole world seemed to be stuck in the past, a complete nightmare for the liberal, non binary Kai. They noticed a shrine like area dedicated to an admittedly handsome giant, the shrine adorned with patriotic symbols.
When they came to the front door a maid, black of course, came up to them and insisted on making sure they were “appropriately dressed” for walking the town. This meant that Kai was given a coat that buttoned up all the way up to their chin, a pair of white lace gloves and a frilled bonnet wrapped around their head. As if they weren’t covered up enough, Kai especially hated how the maid insisted on dressing them, they wanted to protest but didn’t want to bring any more attention to themselves and just wanted to leave the house.
Kai had to pull up their skirts slightly to walk down their house’s steps and onto the cobbled street. They saw horse drawn carriages and everyone was wearing old fashioned stuffy clothes. The thing that surprised Kai the most was the giants that seemed to be normal to the world now, they couldn’t help but notice only white giants, things were starting to get more strange and Kai needed to find out what caused the world to change and why they were the only one to remember the world before.
Kai noticed that the world wasn’t the normal 1850s, everything was very patriotic and American flags adorned every house and hung from every building. This wasn’t the original 1850s but a nationalist alternate one.
After wandering around for a while they learned that the white giants ruled this new world and that America dominated the globe with a white, Christian, heterosexual, patriarchal, capitalist iron fist. Kai kept seeing images and effigies of the bearded white giant and soon learned that he lived in a massive mansion at the edge of town. They would have to be extremely careful, one wrong step and Kai knew they would either be dead or worse.
