John wasn't happy... Well he was touched, but was also a little upset. His daughter had won a vacation for herself and a guest, and she chose him instead of one of her girl friends... or someone she claimed to be a "girl" friend. The 53 year old guy was set in his ways and preferred relaxing in his recliner with a cool beer in his hands. His 16 year old daughter shouldn't have a way of buying him fancy beers or whatever, but she should know better than to blow this vacation on him... The bellboy was taking their luggage to their room with efficiency and wouldn't even let John tip the poor guy doing probably minimum wage if he guessed right.
Vanessa was happy, although she could sense her father's unease... He did his best while raising her and she was happy... ok she was content. There was so much she wished she could do and say in the past but... It wasn't quite enough. The words never exactly came to her, but she figured out through context clues that her mother died in childbirth... and she was an only child... John did his best, but after Vanessa found some old videos when she was around 12 and curious it became obvious to her that her father had hardened a bit after her mom died. His life was mostly going to work, taking days off for holidays or when something important was happening in Vanessa's life, and trying to take care of Vanessa as well as he could. Some neighbors would help, especially with sweet Auntie Rita and Uncle Joseph next door... She did kinda wish she had a mother though. She wasn't exactly close enough to Rita to talk about... puberty stuff... and her dad wasn't the most comforting for those parts... essentially slapped a pack of pads, tampons, and bras and had her figure out what she liked. Still... she could tell John was doing his best as the person he is, and Vanessa wanted him to have a nice vacation from this little luck she had found.
