You watch the beam hit Caleb directly in the middle of his back and watch in anticipation, wondering whether he would transform back into a puppy or transform in a new way altogether.
Yet… nothing happens.
Caleb continues to walk normally, clearly unaffected by the gun, and enters the bedroom.

After all, you didn’t know how to work the damned thing, the instruction booklet far from helpful. Eventually, you come up with a reasonable assumption: Perhaps nothing happened to Caleb because you kept all the switches the same.
You had been unprepared to try something else, and to play it safe, you kept the gun on the same settings when you shot Caleb the second time. However, if you were right, then a minimum of one switch had to be changed to alter the target again. But would you dare to use the gun again when you had no idea what it was capable of? There was no telling how much a target, yourself, or reality would be affected by simply using the gun on different settings. At least you knew what it did at the moment.
A more pressing matter comes to your attention when your insistent boner begins throbbing, obviously exhausted from waiting and more interested in the Anthro in the bedroom than the gun in your hands.
