Before Kai could think of a way to get out of the house Damian took them by the hand and led them to the dining room. They hated having to entertain this asshole but knew they had no choice but to continue. Kai rolled their eyes when Damian pulled out a chair for them, they didn’t identify as a woman but these displays of sexism were starting to get to the brunette. Kai looked for their friend turned slave but Jayla was nowhere to be seen.
“Don’t worry about your handmaiden, she’s with her kind in the kitchens. I know it isn’t very traditional for me to see you before our engagement is officially announced, but I wanted to talk with you before then.” He said.
Kai scoffed at the idea that he didn’t follow traditions when he was the king of tradition, especially on this new world. Kai was going to reply but he continued on instead, as if they already agreed with him.
“I know right, it’s kind of silly—I mean we were childhood friends, we played together in my mother’s gardens. But now that we’re to be engaged it’s like we’re complete strangers.” He said.
Kai wondered if he even wanted them to reply and guesses correctly when he continued in again.
“Once we’re married you can even bring on that slave you’re so fond of, but you’d be better off with one of my maids. I suggest Zahara, she’s a hard worker and quite the looker for one of her kind.” He continued.
Kai was shocked and angered by Damian’s blatantly offensive words, especially towards their best friend. They tried to keep a calm face but knew that they couldn’t stand much more of this right wing nightmare of a world. Surprisingly Damian had actually wanted them to answer.
“I-I’d like to keep Jayla, she knows my routines and such so it would save time on training another.” Kai said, hating how they had to talk about their best friend as if she was property. But their answer seemed to not raise any eyebrows or give away Kai’s true views.
“Quite right, these animals are easy to train but too stupid to learn—but they do make decent cooks.” Damian said as a few slaves brought out dinner for the two.
Kai hated the idea of being served by actual slaves and wanted nothing more than to put a fork to Damian’s dick and free these innocent people, but Kai knew that would only lead to death or worse. The dinner and the time afterwards passed without incident and Kai was thankful Damian preferred the sound of his own voice, it saved them from having to say or agree with any more hateful and wrong things.
When the day was nearing its end Kai and Jayla boarded the horse drawn carriage and were taken back to Kai’s large house. Kai feigned fatigue to avoid talking about their “engagement” to Damien and told their mother that they would like to discuss the details of the marriage, Kai needed to find some way of getting out of marriage. After being undressed and bathed, then redressed in a modest, frilled nightgown and bonnet, Kai was finally allowed to sleep. Kai was sick of being forced into these feminine clothes and longed for their gender neutral clothes from the old world.
