Back at the stable, Dmitri told Theia to inform the stablemaster and headmaster that the mares would be staying with them for the foreseeable future. He then turned his attention to the mares, to examine them more closely.
First, he inspected the magic on the Arabian. With some effort, he could tell it was specifically Anya's. It seemed to be localized around the mare's hooves. He instructed the mare to lift her hooves, revealing golden horseshoes dripping with protective transformative magic. Dmitri frowned.
"What did you do, Anya?" he murmured. The horseshoes reminded him of an amulet Anya had mentioned she made, but it could be a false similarity. Dmitri filed that away for later. The Arabian was staying, that was for sure. She was important to Anya somehow.
Dmitri turned his attention to the palomino. She lacked the same magic as the Arabian, and in fact lacked much innate magic at all. Odd for a Witch's Pony. She also didn't have a brand. All Copperstone cattle and horses were branded. Dmitri knew before she wasn't a Copperstone mare, thanks to her short stature, but her lack of brand gave him a better idea of where she came from.
The Warstones were a Witch family comprised entirely of Horse Witches. They had decided to use their gift to breed designer Witch's Ponies. Expensive, short, low in magic, and available in rare colors, a Warstone Witch's Pony was bred as a status symbol for wealthy non-magical families. Either the palomino was a broodmare that escaped the Warstone farm, or she was someone's escaped prize to show off how much gold they had to waste.
Dmitri patted the palomino fondly. It was likely the two mares hadn't come from the same place, but rather crossed paths and joined to travel together.
He knew the Arabian would be staying. But he wasn't sure what to do with the palomino. Theia clearly wanted her to stay. However, her proper owner was likely searching for her. Dmitri could reach out to the local wealthy families to see if they lost a Witch's Pony. Or he could send her to the Warstone farm, which happened to be not far from the Copperstone estate. There was also a Warstone who lived nearby, Gelvin, who worked as a Horse Witch at a local horse farm. He could always bring the palomino to him.
A final possibility presented itself. He could send her to the Copperstone estate, to join the family's herd. She was a fine broodmare, and undesirable traits from her could be prevented with the right stud.
