You weren’t going along though. To be fair, going there at all wasn’t entirely your decision.
“Come on, son! Daryll from work said this place had the best egg sandwiches in town!”
Your dad, Frank, a loud, boisterous man said as he hurried you out of the car. Your dad had been trying to bond with you more often it appeared, and you supposed taking you out to eat was one of those attempts of his. You guessed it wasn’t so bad, since he’d be paying for it, though you had to admit it was a little embarrassing.
“Coming, dad.” You said as you followed the larger man into the diner.
The place certainly looked very ‘Easter’-themed, you supposed, taking note of the pink and lavender shades of the interior, with the occasional green highlights. Easter bunnies and brightly drawn eggs dotted the walls. The air was heavy with sweets scents, it certainly was making you hungry. Your dad took it in, “Some place, huh, son? They really went all out!”
“Uh, yeah, dad…” You said, feeling a bit dazed as you stepped in further, suddenly bumping into something soft and furry. It took a few moments before you registered this was a very plump and very fuzzy belly. You looked up, your eyes widening as you saw the face of a large cartoony lagomorph, a man with rabbit-like features, with a brightly colored tweed vest, round spectacles, and no pants. You jumped back a bit, before you rationalized that it was only a costume, a very convincing one however.
The bunny man smiled at you, “Well, gawrsh! Sorry kid, wasn’t lookin’ where I was hoppin’!” He laughed, goofily, like the cartoon character he resembled.
He looked over your father, “Are you two together?” Your dad nodded, “Yep, just out for a little father-son bonding.” He grinned, to your further embarrassment as the bunny waiter chuckled, “Well, welcome to The Bunny’s Hole fellas, c’mon, I’ll show ya to yer seats.” He said as he turned, giving you a full view of the puffy tail in the back of his suit that somehow seemed to wiggle, as he literally began to hop away. Your dad seemed weirdly excited, “Man, they REALLY go all out here, huh? Hehe.” He said, ushering you along. You briefly composed yourself, before following him to a booth by the window.
Sitting across from your father, you couldn’t help but scan the room, seeing the other waiters, all dressed like Easter Bunnies too, with small differences in their fur and vests. They really dedicated themselves to this bizarre theme. The bunny currently serving you handed out menus, “We’ll be back shortly to take your orders, just sit tight now!” He chuckled as he began to bounce off in the opposite direction.
You looked at your father, slightly confused, but he seemed weirdly enthusiastic about all this bizarre presentation. “What are you in the mood for, son? Well, most of what they got here are egg-based.” He grinned, looking at you. “It’s pretty nice, right?”
“Uh, yeah, dad, it’s neat.” You said, trying to feign excitement. You decided to browse the menu while you waited for the arrival of one of the other waiters to get your orders. It seemed a bit silly to you, but at least your father seemed to be having a good time. You really only agreed to come here to make him happy too, which he seemed to be.
Still, you couldn't shake this uneasy feeling that something was... 'off' about this place, somehow. The weird waiters dressed as bunnies just seemed a little strange. Still, this place had been getting good reviews lately, so who knows? Maybe it would surprise you?
