Steve was the IT guy for a smallish lifestyle company called 'Desire.' They basically sold store brand generic health and beauty products to rich women. The warehouse was full of big guys loading and unloading merchandise. Steve rarely had to mess with their system, as the inventory and shipping software was run by another business.
Steve's job mostly revolved around the corporate and marketing department. In his opinion, they were all insufferable snobs and fashionistas. They drank $20 coffee and spent half of their day gossiping or making presentations. The latter usually involved Steve being called, out of the blue, to fix something, or plug in an adapter. The whole department lacked basic computer knowledge and it was a daily frustration.
Steve was a tall guy, around 6-foot, but he was also chubby in the middle. He'd always been a bit socially awkward and introverted. His demeanor wasn't appreciated among the cliques of the marketing crew, but his technical skill kept him his job. Several months ago, he'd been friendly with a female intern, Sarah. She'd also been a tech-head, and a sci-fi geek, so they got friendly pretty fast. Though Sarah had been abruptly fired by Lynn, the head of marketing, for getting a coffee order wrong.
Steve began to hate Lynn after that, thinking of her as "Boss Bitch." Months later, his opinion of Lynn has gotten worse. One particular morning, the IT department received a sample of a new product by mistake. Steve opened the box and read through the technical aspects of the "Chronivac 4.0."
"Hmm..." mused Steve, "I guess I should at least test it out." He poured through the manual with the speed of a man used to reading entire user agreements. "Oh, yeah. It's gonna be a fun day."
