The altered sentence on the phone’s scuffed screen now read, “This app’s user is their boss, Roger Willis.”
Roger blinked wearily as he glanced down at his phone, confused… He looked around at the alley he found himself in, feeling as though something had happened, but he didn’t know, or couldn’t remember what. What was he even doing again? He shut his eyes, trying to collect himself. He had gone out on his break, as the owner of the restaurant, he could take as many breaks as he wanted after all. He remembered he had downloaded this phone app that claimed it could change one thing about anything just by editing a sentence, and… he also knew it worked. He didn’t know HOW he knew, just that it did.
He took a puff of the cigarette dangling in his mouth, reasoning something had been changed, even if he couldn’t remember what. He must’ve changed something… Is that why he was in the alley right now instead of making sure his bistro was running smoothly? He took another look back down at his phone, prompting him to input a new target. He shook his head, still disoriented. “Maybe later…” He chuckled… though he had to admit it was pretty cool. With this app, he could change anything, he knew that much at least. He’d never been the most confident guy, not with his ‘shame’ that saw him bullied throughout most of high school, but somehow just having the app with him gave him a strange peace of mind.
Roger pocketed his phone and put out his cigarette, stepping back into his restaurant. The day was winding down, so he supposed there wasn’t too much of a rush, still, he had to make sure his employees weren’t slacking off without him around. And as he thought about it, feeling the phone in his pocket, maybe he could have a little fun with the app while he was at it too? Looking in at the remaining diners and his staff, a devilish smirk creeped onto his face as he considered all the possibilities. He wasn’t even limited to the people, he could even change himself, he could change all the people who treated him like shit, or he could change the restaurant itself, or even the whole world. The app seemed to have limitless potential.
Roger Willis chuckled, pulling his phone out of his pocket again just to look at his reflection in the screen. He wasn’t going to be the pathetic, quarter inch-dicked loser that everyone picked on anymore, now he could finally be somebody.
