Jasper did her best to cover her tracks. She redressed the men after they were dead and used their weapons to give them injuries that could have killed them. She even made them hold their weapons while she directed the stack. With these steps, she hoped to keep anyone from suspecting a succubus as the killer. Unfortunately, eventually people grew suspicious. From the secret passageways, she listened in on a meeting of the King's Council, a month after the coup.
"Men, we are facing a dangerous lack of guards," one councilman said. "We have lost a man every night since we took power. The guards are beginning to notice. Some are fleeing before they can be killed."
"Who is killing them?" a different councilman asked.
"At this point, we do not know. We suspect it could be a witch or even a magical creature of some sort. They leave no evidence behind other than the body." There was concerned murmuring. "My King, what say you?"
"I say we take three steps," the new King, the usurper, said. "First, all guards must patrol in pairs. Second, we must try to set a trap for the killer. Third, we will reach out to our witchly allies for assistance. If magic is involved, they are our best hope to stop this killer."
The meeting then switched to discussing economics. Jasper sat back, thinking, her tail twitching. Clearly, she had to do something different or risk getting caught. Then again, she could always just eavesdrop on meetings to stay one step ahead of the rebels' plans.
