Thundering sounded. Gelvin and his mares looked over. A wild herd of horses was passing by. Gelvin quickly looked for the leader. She was a gorgeous blue roan mare, in the front of the herd. Gelvin told his mares to wait for him, then galloped up to the wild herd. Before the leader could do anything, Gelvin threw himself onto her back. She whinnied and reared up, but Gelvin was already inside her. And thanks to his fertility spell, conceiving twins with her.
The herd leader recognized that she had been claimed and caved to him. Communication with wild horses could be difficult. Domestic ones tended to use words, while wild ones conveyed raw emotions through their neighs and whinnies. Even domestic horses were poor conversationalists, however, as they had the intelligence of an animal. Nonetheless, Gelvin and the former leader were able to have a conversation, in which she formally transferred leadership of the herd to him and accepted being merely one of his many mates.
Gelvin returned to his mares and instructed them to come with him. His mares eagerly mingled with his new herd. The charm and paste were beginning to wear off now, but as Gelvin got the herd moving for Wind's Grove, he hoped that joining a larger herd would work and keep them in line.
