You don't really know your neighbor that well, just that he's a young man living alone with his dog, but you've always been kind of jealous. You'd never had a pet, and even your brother only had a goldfish. Allergies meant cats were out, and with two kids to wrangle, your parents weren't really interested in adding a furry friend to the family. But now, even if you couldn't have a dog, maybe you could be one for a while. What would you learn about doggie life? Would it be fun?
Your neighbor's dog is a young male German Shepherd, and since it was a purebreed, you weren't sure if he had been neutered. Not that it mattered, if you found out that was in your neighbor's plans, all you had to do was jump out, right?
Opening the window slightly, you whistle a few times. Luckily, that gets the dog's attention, and he looks at you, at which point you make the leap. Suddenly, you are down in a grassy backyard surrounded by a wood fence, looking up at your body as it closes the window and starts working on homework. You pant in happiness as your tail wags.
You have a tail! Lost in the wonderment, you turn to look at it, and find yourself making a few ridiculous circles as if you are chasing it. Surprisingly, walking on four paws does not seem that difficult, although you find yourself pulling on the dog's instincts to ensure you don't trip over yourself. Amused at the novelty, you lick your nose, then try yipping and barking. It's quite funny to hear the sounds coming from your own throat. You trot over to the water bowl on the porch and proceed to lap up some water, then sit on your haunches to scratch behind your ear with your hind paw. It's not that you were itchy, you just wanted to try doing all the things a dog could do.
Suddenly, new scent approaches, and your tail starts wagging. The dog's body recognizes it as its owner, your neighbor. His name is Marcus, the dog's memory tells you. The young man comes out on the porch and slips a leash over your head.
"Well, Scout, would you like to go out, boy?" he asks with a smile. You happily wag your tail and follow his lead, even though you are unsure where you are going.
