Lirin started to feel tempted. After all, who wouldn't want to be strong and powerful, especially in a profession that often relied on fighting. Even the less dangerous beginner quests which she would take still involved some degree of risk, and any advantage would be priceless.
However, she was witty enough to see the possible drawbacks. Her brother was not confirmed as dead, just missing. If someone who knew him spotted her acting as him, it could lead to no end of trouble. After all, it wasn't like she could use his adventurer's identification with the guild, or even his skills for that matter. She would only have his muscle. And even that was questionable, considering she didn't really know exactly how the ring worked.
Sighing, Lirin picked up the ring to put it safely in a drawer...but changed her mind and tucked it in one of her pouches instead. After all, it was better to have something to fall back on if she ended up in a life-or-death situation, especially since she could no longer afford a health-restoring magical tool instead.
The next morning, Lirin headed out to the guild to choose a quest. There were always quite a few available for beginners, but the better-paying ones went fast. And there was no way a newbie like her would ever get a commission, either.
Reaching the guild just as the doors opened, Lirin stood on tiptoe to look over the shoulders of other adventurers at the request board. Her brother would have been able to take on higher-level quests, but without a party, she was stuck, on the very bottom tier. Lirin sighed and reached for a quest request.
