The nurse paused at the confused and wary look you were giving.
"I'm going too fast again aren't I?" She said more to herself than to you. "Okay, have you heard of Genetic Engineering yet?"
"Yes, they just cured sickle cell disease, right?" You confirmed.
"Exactly!" The nurses level of animation grew. "In other words, a trait that someone wasn't born with, was given to them... Well, I'm aware of your medical file and some of the challenges you are going to have to deal with in the future, if not already."
You shuffled uncomfortably waiting for her to get to her point. "Oh, um, okay?"
"There is a generic serum I can give you that will address many many factors, simply put, a super serum or super soldier serum."
Your mind reeled, this doesn't make sense. Why are you being offered this, and why aren't your parents here? You are only 14 after all. "Super soldier?" Was all you managed to say.
"Yes, I suppose the government is probably behind this at some level, but I actually work for a company that is working on the bleeding edge of genetic enhancement technology. I was placed in this position to find candidates like you, whom are genetically cursed, or ungifted at the very least."
"But you're the school nurse." You said.
"That's the less prestigious of my titles. Now, if you accept, I will monitor you periodically throughout your high school journey. You can't tell anyone about this, and I will deny this conversation if it is ever mentioned. You understand that there are risks, you assume them upon accepting this treatment, and the changes would be permanent."
"That's fine but what are you even talking about?" You blurted out feeling like this was moving too fast.
"Well there's the standard super soldier enhancements but my company expects those to become standard and unmarketable to the public as everyone will get them soon enough. Instead we expect to be able to profit off consumer grade enhancements, and we need to know how early the application needs to be made to have full effect. You won't be able to get a copy of this list but you will be able to look at it when you're here alone."
You begin glancing at the list making out four columns of fine print detailing countless items but only being able to recognize a few such as Myostatin Inhibition, Metabolic Pathway Enhancement, and several disease names followed by the word cure, one of which you heard your family mention, before the paper was snatched out of your hands and placed in a drawer.
Another student was walking in. The nurse looked at you and asked you to lie down while she took care of the other student. Feigning to be unwell while the other students headache was treated with an over the counter drug, you weighed your options wishing you had a photographic memory.
"I'll do it", you told the nurse as the student left, and before you knew what was happening you were being warned this would hurt and being stuck with a needle.
"You should expect some changes to start within the week or two, like your flavoring and odor, but some will take more time as your puberty ramps up."
"My what?" you asked having only seen clinical doctor speak modifications listed.
She glanced out the window, grabbed the paper and turned it over listing another bunch of columns with words you recognized better such as Semen Flavor: Fruit Punch, Natural Odor: Polo Blue, Eye Color: Sapphire, Hair Color: Black ...
You looked up in sudden concern, "I have brown hair and brown eyes, that will be a real obvious change!"
"When you lose the glasses just say you're trying colored contacts and dying your hair. Teens are notorious for it." She smiled and took back the sheet.
"But my parents will know!" you exclaimed.
"They will take you to the eye doctor and the doctor will confirm you are in good health and send you on your way. Speaking of being on your way. You should get back to class. Talk to you in a month." She went back to her desk hiding the paper and filling out paperwork for the student who was just in.
As the rest of the day wore on you felt more and more off as genetic machinery ripped through your cells changing the very fiber of your being, What do you notice out of place first?
