Data waste explorers

added by TaleSpinning Yesterday TG O

Cassidy and Klein were self-described explorers of the data wastes. Areas between the major areas that were a bit unstable. They dabbled in a bit of everything from trading items from different game worlds, trying to find the source of whatever gamified everything. You see inside the game areas things were mostly set. They followed rules, had certain aesthetics, and their systems were rigid. Outside the most stable thing was the dirt as mountains, forests, lakes, etc. shifted quite easily along with whatever had existed. So danger 1 of the data wastes was that if you stood around for too long you'd risk getting swallowed up/trapped by the geography. Danger 2 was the instability of the game systems. Some areas had classes, levels, skills, special items, perks, maybe not all at once but they were rigid. The data wastes were a bit of a shrodinger's cat of features and if you were relying on a particular thing working all the time it could easily fail you if the data waste just decided to turn that feature off. Finally the 3rd danger was the instability of reality. Data waste "explorers" quickly figured out what many other didn't, reality had been turned into data. It all seemed as real as it did before but with extra features, but when coming into contact with some instabilities sometimes people had binary flowing out of odd wounds or even whole files containing classes/skills/game stuff to things they'd think were inherent like their memories, ability to taste, or even something crucial like a file containing their literal heart... If left alone data bleeding was deadly for that last part, but some bandits figured out ways to inflict those wounds and steal attributes after turning their victim into a pile of code and files.

Cassidy and Klein were currently on the run after a data storm had caught up. They ran hugging each other into their modified van from a cyberpunk world as data and files were flowing out of them, they were hugging mostly to retain the lost data among each other as bleeding data could flow into the other. Entering the car Cassidy in the drivers seat started the car and Klein took some emergency plugs from the passenger's side of the car and jammed them into him and Cassidy. They sped off away from the storm as Klein started activating the stabilization program. It was a little much to sort everything in a rush but they could stem the data loss to nothing quickly like this. Odd wounds that looked a bit like white noise stopped as the program of reality were reading the data in the couple's programs and things settled.
Klein sighed as she groped her breasts and said "I hate when we switch sexes like this... There's a game world right next to that ridge, We have to get out of this damn storm!"
Cassidy chuckled in a baratone and said "Welp, time for me to pray that it's a fantasy one. I would really like to practice some magic." They approached the border quickly and passing through it they entered a stable world to rest and lick their wounds a bit. But which game world did they enter?
