Kyle nervously made his way to the kitchen, his new hair style blocking one of his left eye, he entered the room. His mother started talking as she turned around.
“There you are, you don't want to be...” She paused. “Kyle? What have you done with yourself honey?”
“Um... I'm... um, trying out a new look?” He sheepishly lied.
“I'd say, you did your own make up too!” She smiled, “It looks really good, honestly.”
“Thanks?” He said.
“What made you go all... goth girl?” She asked.
“Um.... I wanted to just... try it out.” He lied, “I'm just interested in.... experimenting.”
“Oh! Well, it looks great on you, just don't go stealing my makeup now!” She walked over to him and gave him a hug and kiss on the cheek. “I'm proud of you, making a statement and trying out new things. And I support your choice, just, you know, tell me next time?”
“Okay mom. I will.” Kyle said.
“How long are you trying this out?” She asked as she continued making breakfast.
“About a month, maybe?”
“Oh, really trying on the look, well you'd make a beautiful girl, and your a very handsome... goth? Is it? We used to call it emo or punk back in my day.”
“Yeah, goth.” Kyle started feeling a little more confident. “The hair was a bit of a pain to get though.”
“Well you usually do wear it long like that, the dye job though...” She gave a thumbs up, “Really good, you'll have to show me how sometime.”
Kyle ate his breakfast, his mouth feeling a little funny because of the lipstick, it was his first time wearing some after all. She gave him a kiss on the cheek as he left the house and walked over to the bus stop. There he'd run into a couple of people he went to school with, Tom, the jock and Angie, his girlfriend, one of the cheer squad. He'd expect to be mocked by them, knowing that anything he usually does or wears is a point to make fun of him with. But as he walked over to the bus stop they both caught sight of him, looked at each other, then back at him.
“Kyle?” Tom asked, “What the fuck dude?”
“Yeah, I...'
“You look really great.” Angie said, “Not that I'm into goths and all, but still, you look good.”
“Yeah, better than that plain dorky shit you usually wear, nice dye job too.”
“Um.. thanks?” Kyle blushed, not used to being complimented.
“Are you gay dude?” Tom asked, “I always wondered if you were gay.”
“No. I'm actually bi sexual.” Kyle was indeed bi, but where his new confidence was coming from was beyond him. “I just never really came out about it, I'm trying out the whole.... femboy look.”
“It really suits you.” Angie said, “You've always been a little twink.”
Kyle almost responded but the bus pulled up and they got on, he sat in his usual seat, catching the eyes of almost everyone with his new look, some just gawked, a few girls gave a thumbs up, and he caught one of the guys winking at him. How was he going to deal with all this attention, hell, what would Jarred say?
