Thomas slept for a long time, gradually becoming aware of heartbeats and pressure, floating, warmth. Then pressure and movement, and sudden light as he was squeezed from the she-bear's womb. For a long time he stayed by the bear, by Mother. He could not see, could barely move, and spent his time sleeping or nursing. He remembered being a boy, but also remembered the fae. They had made him a bear, an unborn cub! And as days past and he got more used to his new form, he realized he was female. That did not bother him any more than waking up as an animal had.
After several weeks, Thomas could move around and had fur. She was growing quickly, and soon was able to lope around her mother when they went out for berries and water. The weather was different now. How long had she been in the bear's womb? It was difficult to even think of passing time - she did not have the capability of much abstract thought. Eventually, Thomas gave up and lived as a cub until she was almost a year old, now a good 80 pounds. She and her mother were eating some berries early one evening when a curious scent reached her nose. A human! Struggling with memories, Thomas realized this was a Boy Scout - probably from the same camp he had been in. She also saw some of the fae starting to hover above the boy. He was going to be a brother, a father, or maybe even a berry bush. DId that matter to her?
