...and immediately looks away and covers her face. It's Tonya. Why is Tonya here? WHEN did Tonya get here?
"Aww, she's shy!" She hears her best friend say as she picks Leah up.
"Yeah, she's a little lady, already embarrassed about being changed. I think she might just be sick, and is stuck in diapers for a bit." Jeremy says, "You really don't need to do this, Tonya. I asked you here to chill, not do my job for me."
"It's fine, honestly. I'm a babysitter too, might as well share the burden." Tonya responds, and Leah's brain is in pure fight or flight, "Besides, it's not like I have other plans." There was a clear bit of bitterness in her voice, but Leah could hardly care at the moment. She could only calm down at the realization that Tonya hasn't recognized her yet.
"Someone who care about kids? I can see why you like her, Jer. Besides her being cute." Locy added teasingly.
"Hey, don't still my girlfriend. I just got her." Jeremy zinged back. A splash of cold cooled Leah's panic; Tonya and Jeremy were dating? It made sense, those two ACTUALLY knew each other. Leah would always bug her for little details and news on the boy whenever they interacted. Of course, Leah never knew them as anything more than acquaintances in the same friend circle, and Tonya would be very aware of Leah's crush. Leah couldn't ignore the slight feeling of betrayal, fully acknowledging how unfair it is. Afterall, Leah's been ghosting Tonya since her brother's birthday, she didn't really have much room to complain.
Even as Leah felt herself being laid down and her diaper removed, she never uncovered her eyes. She fully covered them with both arms, like a baby trying to sleep. She chose her clothes specifically to avoid being recognized, but nothing short of entirely obscuring her face would hide her from detection from her best friend---she's even trying to keep her back from showing so that Tonya can't recognize her birthmark.
"Could help but notice you sounded upset about not having plans. Sounds like there's a story there." Lucy commented, getting a frustrated grumble from Tonya as she meticulously rubbed down Leah's crotch.
"Sorry, it's nothing. I just...usually I'd spend break with someone, but they're not available." Tonya says, more sad than angry.
"Someone other than your boyfriend? Should he be jealous?"
"No, it's nothing like that Lacy. We only started spending time together a few weeks ago because she was upset plans got canceled and had free time. You don't have to talk about this if you don't want to, Tonya." Jeremy voiced sympathetically.
Wait...Leah wracked her brains. She couldn't mean...was Tonya talking about HER?! They were supposed to meet up and go roller skating, but Leah had canceled their plans last second via text and never gave a proper explanation. It had been right after the party, and Leah couldn't bring herself to meet her face-to-face. Tonya kept trying to get her to answer why and talk to her, but Leah avoided it via half-thought responses, making them shorter and shorter until she just stopped responding and Tonya just stopped texting. It made Leah feel miserable, but she didn't know what else to do. That...that couldn't be what's being discussed, could it?
"No, it's nothing to get upset about. It's just...my best friend has started avoiding me, and I don't know why because she won't tell me." Tonya says while applying baby powder, still sounding rather upset. "We would never go a day without talking before, and now...she won't even answer my calls." Her words quivered, like she was either on the verge of tears or on the verge of shouting in anger.
Leah feels guilt bypass her panic. She...didn't mean to hurt her. She honestly didn't even know if Tonya would care that much, given how many more friends she had than Leah. But also...is that why she's dating Jeremy? Is she angry at Leah, or did she genuinely like the guy?
As Tonya finishes placing the last tapes on Leah's new diaper...
