Cal couldn't believe Bryce had dared him to a transform dare. That was just a silly schoolkid game, wasn't it? He certainly couldn't think of anyone who'd been actually transformed by it. Well, there was that one jock he used to play football with who used to joke that he'd been a geek chick before a magical bet at a slumber party. But surely he was joking, right? Yeah, of course, he must have been.
Cal was pretty sure Bryce would finally admit that he was just joking, too, after Cal asked him what the loser's or winner's transformation would be. How could Bryce actually believe in this nonsense? But surprisingly for Cal, Bryce did actually have an answer:
"If you fail to complete the dare, you'll become a dog. You'll be my favorite breed, of course! And if you can actually fess up to your crush on somebody, I'll be your favorite dog instead! And my job and my apartment will be yours, if that happens."
Cal just sat there, still on Bryce's couch gaping at him for probably ten seconds, before responding: "What are we five? You do some hocus pocus mumbo jumbo and expect to turn one of us into an animal? For someone so smart, you can be so dumb sometimes, Bryce."
"Hmph, says the one who DOESN'T have his own place yet, and mooches soda and chips here at mine. Come on Cal, you're practically my pet anyways. You're always complaining about having to go home to your parents, and how they're always on your case about finding a job. You may act like a tough guy, but we both know you're too shy to ask anyone out. You probably didn't know I am allowed to have a pet in this apartment. So maybe you don't have to apply for a job or live at home any more."
"Damn, Bryce, you really sound like you believe in this shit or something. Fine, if I can't tell someone at the park that I have a crush on them, you'll be start taking me out to the dog park. But I can! You sure you want me have to your life? You wanna be MY pet in MY apartment, Mr. I-think-I'm-a-better-adult-but-still-believe-in-hexes?"
"Hey, being your dog doesn't sound too bad. I just hope your favorite breed isn't too embarrassing. But somehow I doubt that will be a problem. How about we go get this over with, and I'll pick up your new collar and leash on our way home? How's that sound, boy?"
"Pssh, I'll show you. There's lot's of hot pieces of meat coming to work out at the town park. You'll see. I'll admit I have a crush on one of them, too their face, no problem! And you'll see this urban legend about some transform dare ain't nothing but a lot of hot air! Follow me."
