The break room smelled of coffee with the occasional whiff of cigarette smoke coming from the door leading out into the rooftop smoking area.
“I am surprised we still have a smoking area.” Said a very tired nurse as she heated up some leftovers from the night before for her dinner.
“Some of the old school doctors still use it.” Confirmed a younger doctor who looked almost as tired as the nurse. “Wouldn’t go out there now, it’s 3am in December.”
“Not unless you want to freeze your balls off.” Countered an older nurse who took the night shift with stride. She had been doing this shift for decades to the point it felt unnatural for her to be asleep when the sun was down.
“Did you here about that homeless guy who coded in the ER?” inquired another nurse
“The one who attacked someone?” inquired a different doctor who looked up from her phone.
“Heard he bite someone.” Said the nurse
“They did, probably high on one drug or another.” Countered the older nurse “Was talking about were creatures and other shit like that.”
“Still did they do a full test what if that person had something and passed it on.” Started the nurse.
“Already tested the blood of the homeless guy and it came back clean, besides the normal stuff you find on someone who lives in the street. Only thing odd was a boat load of drugs for animals, likely broke into a veterinary and stole the drugs and used them.” stated a lab technician “Likely that killed him and gave him one hell of a high as he went, but nothing that could be passed by blood. Also tested the person he bite.”
“Who was it?” inquired the nurse
“Can’t tell you, hospital rules.” Countered the technician.
“Besides whenever something like this happens they load the person who was bite with so much stuff it kills almost anything.” Stated the old nurse “It’s to protect the hospital’s ass from being sued, last thing they want is to have a news story about someone getting HIV or the like while on the job and them doing nothing to prevent it.”
“This happens a lot?” inquired one of the newest nurses.
“About once a month.” Stated the older nurse with a shrug. “Get used to it kid, weird stuff happens on the night shift.”
Little did that nurse or anyone else know but that bite would forever change the world, for their hospital would be ground zero for the 1st major outbreak of the furry virus.
