Ty's Power

More dinner conversation

added by prevert 2 months ago O

Ty's parents wanted to know more about Lisa. "In school, which classes do you like," asked June.

"I like most of my classes," replied Lisa. "But science and math are among my favorites. Last year, I really liked biology. This year I'm taking chemistry, which I'm finding more challenging. I'm also enjoying French."

Mark asked, "Have you given any thought to what careers you might like?"

"I'm considering veterinary medicine," she answered.

Dustin asked, "Do you play any musical instruments?"

"I tried the violin, but wasn't very good at it. This year I started playing the clarinet, but I'm not very advanced."

"Whar do you enjoy doing in your free time," asked Mark.

"I keep pretty busy," said Lisa, "but I like softball, volleyball, and reading."

Ty interjected, "How about we slow down grilling Lisa, and give her a chance to eat?"

Lisa said, "Oh, I don't mind the questions, but I'd like to learn about all of you, as well."

"Oh, we're not very interesting, I'm afraid," June said. "I'm an accountant, and Mark is an architect. Between work, and raising two boys, it doesn't seem like we have much time for fun."

There was some more chit-chat as they finished the meal, but Ty was happy that it seemed less like they were interrogating Lisa. "I hope she's made a good impression," Ty thought to himself. Out loud, he said, "It's my turn to do the dishes tonight, but you all can keep talking," and started to get up.

Dustin said. "No, it's not right for you to have to do that when you have a guest. I'll do that tonight, if you'll take my turn on Thursday."

Ty said, "Thank you, Dustin. That's vary kind of you, and I'll be glad to trade," as he sat back down. Dustin stood, and busied himself with carrying the dishes into the kitchen.

"I'm afraid we don't have a lot of entertainment to offer, Lisa," Mark said. After dinner, we often watch TV or read."

"We do have some board games," June offered, "but I imagine you'd probably rather spend time with Ty."

Lisa looked at Ty, who shrugged. "If you'd like to play board games, that sounds fine, but otherwise Ty and I can keep ourselves entertained. I can't stay too late."

"Could we ever!" thought Ty, but out loud he said to Lisa, "if it's alright with you, why don't the two of us go to the back patio, and sit and talk?"

Lisa ssid, "That sounds lovely. If the rest of you will please excuse us?"

"Certainly," said June, "You kids have a good time." Mark nodded assent.

Ty led Lisa out to the patio, where they sat.
