Diego asked Ty to please have a seat, then closed the door and took a seat himself. "Ty," he said, "you seem like a kind and smart young man. I hope you don't mind if I speak plainly, to the point of being blunt and possibly even offensive."
Ty gulped, not entirely sure what was happening, but said, "Yes sir, that will be fine."
"Don't be nervous, Ty. And as I said before, please call me Diego. The point of this discussion is that Maria and I are very protective of Lisa, and don't want her to get hurt."
"Nor do I, Diego," Ty replied, "I would _never_ do anything to hurt her."
"That's good to hear, Ty, but I still want to have this talk. I don't know whether you're already in a sexual relationship with Lisa, and I don't want to know. Maria and I have already had The Talk with her. Have your parents had The Talk with you?"
"No," replied Ty, definitely nervous and uncomfortable talking about it. "And I don't think they intend to, but they know I've taken Health Education class in school, and they know that includes sex ed. When Lisa had dinner with us, after we brought her home, Mark said to me that Lisa seems like a nice girl, and that I need to be careful not to get her, or myself, into trouble. I knew exactly what he meant."
"That's good to hear," said Diego. "I'm sorry that your parents didn't give you The Talk, as I think that is every parent's responsibility to their childen. It's not my place to give you The Talk, but I'm glad you at least have had the class. For all I know, that might actually be better. If any question ever arises, that you want to talk to someone about, I want you to know that you are welcome to talk to Maria or me, your own parents, or a counselor or nurse at school. We want what's best for both Lisa _and_ you."
"Thank you," Ty responded.
"So when we had The Talk with Lisa, she decided that she would take birth control pills. We have no reason to think that she wouldn't be doing that, but as her boyfriend, it is your responsibility to talk to her about that. Birth control is the reponsibility of _both_ partners."
"Yes," Ty said. "We have discussed it."
"Good," said Diego. "Now, I'm sorry to ask such a personal question, but we don't want Lisa catching a venereal disease. Do you have, or have you had in the last two years, any other sexual partners?"
"No," answered Ty.
"Far be it from me to try to control your sex life," Diego said, "but if you do have multiple sex partners, please take appropriate precautions. In such a case, you should use condoms, even if your partners are on the pill."
"Yes, I understand," said Ty. "That was covered in sex ed. But I will not have any other partners as long as Lisa and I are together."
"I believe you mean that," Diego replied, "but under sufficient temptation, your resolve might waver. If that happens, just remember to protect yourself, and Lisa.
"One last thing. We told Lisa that we don't expect her to be abstinent, but that we expect her to be careful. From what you said about your conversation with your father, it sounds like your parents do not expect you to be abstinent either, but that is between you and them. It would be hypocritical of us to tell her that she can have sex, but not in our house. Therefore, we request that you not just be careful about birth control, and avoiding disease, but also, if you have sex with Lisa here, please be circumspect about it. We don't want to hear it, or see any obvious signs of it. Keep it strictly between the two of you, in her bedroom. That doesn't mean you have to be sneaky. Just don't make a lot of noise, and don't leave her room without being decently dressed. We will give you privacy. If we need to talk to her, or you, we will knock on the door, call, or text. You don't have to be embarrassed about that if it happens. One of you just has to say, 'just a minute', and we'll be patient. Unless there's a major emergency like a fire, in which case Lisa's and your safety overrides any concerns over propriety."
"Yes, Diego," Ty said. "I understand. Thank you for being so understanding."
"Thank you, Ty," Diego said. "I was your age once, and I wish our parents had been as understanding. But that was a long time ago, and we don't want to repeat mistakes of the past. I'm sorry that this conversation was unpleasant for you, but Maria and I think it's important to establish the ground rules up front. You're a smart and considerate young man, and I'm sure you'll keep your word."
Diego stood up, so Ty did as well. Diego held out his right hand, and they shook. "Yes. Thank you, Diego. I won't deny that this conversation made me uncomfortable, but I agree that it's good that we're all on the same page."
Diego smiled, and led Ty back to the living room.
