It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and Eric had finally taken a break from studying to get out on a bike ride. He was going along his usual route when suddenly he came to a stop, frowning. Ahead of him was a grassy park area, with a couple of park benches and a little fountain - nice enough, but he was sure this had been a store before. As he looked over the park area in confusion, his eye caught a glint of metal. Dismounting his bike, he leaned it against one of the benches and walked over. It was a little bronze ring, seemingly unadorned. Curious, he picked it up and began fiddling with it.
At that moment, Eric's phone rang. Distracted with the ring, he used his free hand to grab and open the phone, not noticing that the caller ID was "Kim - Do Not Answer!"
"Hello?" Eric said absently. He fiddled with the ring, wondering if it would fit his finger.
"Hey, Eric," said a familiar girl's voice. Eric's eyes widened as he recognized it: Kim, his ex-girlfriend from his senior year in high school. "Been a long time."
"Yeah, uh...how are you?" Eric said. He was a bit startled by the call from his ex, who he had been ignoring since she started calling him a few months ago. Evidently, she had some regrets about breaking up with him. Even though he had been sad back when it happened, he had come to realize it was for the best - not the least because it had left him free to eventually find his current girlfriend, Amy. He fiddled some more with the ring, slipping it on and off one of his fingers.
"I'm fine, I guess," Kim said. "Just missing you, you know?"
"Come on, Kim," Eric said with a sigh, leaving the ring on his finger and turning to head back towards his bike. "You broke up with me, remember?"
