Chronivac Version 4.0

Getting distracted

added Yesterday A O

Trotting along the sidewalks for another few blocks, you find the scent getting a little less vivid but still plenty fresh enough to follow. It's definitely been more than a few minutes your mysterious box-giver passed this way. You must be getting closer to wherever they picked up the package, so you must also be getting closer to solving the mystery of the Chronivac.

Of course, it's still taking some effort to stay so solidly focused on this one scent when you've got practically the entire city in your nostrils. Maybe you should have picked a canine with not quite such an OP sense of smell? But you picked bloodhound, and that's what you'll stay for a few more hours at least. Oh, well, at least it's a nice day. The afternoon sun warms the great big patch of black fur on your back. The smell of pizza in your dog-breath makes you somehow both happier and hungrier. Your huge tongue licks your nose and brings the local smells in even more copiously. A human on a cell phone rushes by in an expensive suit, sadly not even taking a second to enjoy the warm, scent-filled summer breeze. Your bouncing paws carry you along the edge of a friendly green-space and---

[sniff, sniff, sniff]

You smell something. Something in the green-space.

[sniff]

Something furry. But not like your new dog fur. Something different. Your giant bloodhound ears collect the subtle rustling of a small creature just about .... over .... THERE!

"So what?" your human mind wonders, "It's just a squirrel."

But it's NOT just a squirrel! It's a ... it's a ... it's a ... a SQUIRREL! Sitting in the grass, flicking its fluffy tail coyly, munching an acorn in the busiest little hurry. Speed-running its existence in a way that would even but the human in that business suit to shame. Something about that smell, something about that sound, something about that SQUIRREL fills you up with FEELING. Anger? Jealousy? Excitement? Friendliness? Play? Hunt? All of it? Whatever it is you're feeling, you just know you have to get closer to that SQUIRREL!

Soon it's flitting across the grass and you're barreling after it, faster than you could even run in your human existence. You even hear yourself barking (BARKING! like an actual DOG!) and then it leaps up into the air and lands against a tree trunk, hurrying up into the branches like it's life depends on it. (Maybe it does.)

WOOF! ... WOOF! ... WOOF!

Whatever you were going to do to it, it's too late now. The things gone and there's no way you can get up there with those canine paws.

"Man, that was fun though! Who knew I had so much pent up energy? My blood is pumping, my adrenaline is rushing. I really wanna chase something! I wanna---"

Something long, hairy and brown flicks into view from behind you. Ooh! There it is on your other side. It's, it's, it's taunting you! You lunge toward it around your right side and then---ah! There it is again on your left! "I didn't get my SQUIRREL but I can still get YOU!" your mind screams, your predatory instincts raging. Round and round you spin, almost catching up to whatever-it-is, before it darts around even farther! At last, in a final dramatic POUNCE you BITE the big long hairy thing ...... and then flinch at the pain of sharp TEETH clamping down on your spine. Embarrassed, you let the appendage fall from your mouth and droop back down behind you where it came from.

"What is wrong with me? Chasing squirrels? My own tail? I haven't even been a dog for an hour yet! ... Probably. I've got to pull myself together!"

Still, you really were supposed to chase something, weren't you? It was a box ... no, no, it was some, uh, computer thing! That lets you change your body? No, it was a scent, yeah! A scent from where it came from. The person who left it on your doorstep in a box.

"Sigh, this is gonna be a long six hours," you think, following your own scent back to the sidewalk, getting ready to find that scent again.
