CYOTF (Human)

Gym Rat - 01

In the dim recesses of a gymnasium's rafters in Lansing, Michigan, a female Norway rat eked out a modest existence. Her days were spent navigating the labyrinth of steel beams and wooden planks, scavenging morsels dropped by the oblivious humans below. The cacophony of bouncing basketballs and echoing shouts was her constant backdrop, a symphony of survival in a world that barely acknowledged her presence.

Then came the Fusion Wave.

A surge of energy, inexplicable and all-encompassing, cascaded through the gym, altering reality in its wake. The rat's small frame convulsed as the transformation overtook her. Limbs elongated, bones restructured, and consciousness expanded. When the tremors subsided, she found herself perched precariously on the rafters' edge, no longer a mere rodent but an anthropomorphic being of striking appearance.

Her fur, a sleek amalgamation of silver and charcoal, clung to a lithe, human-like form. Muscles, subtly defined, hinted at both agility and strength. A long, sinuous tail extended gracefully behind her, aiding balance as she adjusted to her newfound stature. Her face retained the delicate features of her species—a tapered snout, twitching whiskers, and large, expressive eyes that gleamed with intelligence and curiosity.

The gymnasium, once a familiar haven, now loomed vast and alien. Below, the transformed rat observed the humans, their faces contorted with fear and revulsion. Whispers of "monster" and "vermin" reached her keen ears. Panic surged as someone hurled a basketball in her direction. Instinctively, she leapt from the rafters, landing with feline grace before sprinting towards the exit.

Emerging into the cityscape of Lansing, she was met with chaos. The Fusion Wave had left its indelible mark—beings of various forms roamed the streets, some embraced, others shunned. Yet, her rodent heritage rendered her an outcast among outcasts. The stigma of her species, long associated with filth and disease, clung to her despite her transformed elegance.

Days blurred into nights as she navigated the urban jungle, seeking refuge in shadowed alleys and subterranean tunnels. The sewers became both sanctuary and prison, echoing with the distant hum of the city above. Here, she was alone, her reflection in the murky waters her sole companion.

Time marched on. The world above adapted, forging a new normalcy in the aftermath of the Fusion Wave. Communities formed, integrating the transformed and the unchanged. Yet, she remained on the periphery, her heart heavy with the weight of isolation. The distant glow of city lights beckoned, a siren's call to rejoin the world she'd been cast from.

Memories of rejection and fear paralyzed her steps. The sting of thrown objects, the sharpness of shouted slurs, the omnipresent threat of traps and poisons—all vivid reminders of humanity's capacity for cruelty. Yet, the ache of solitude gnawed deeper than any physical wound.

Perched atop a secluded hill overlooking Lansing, she watched as life unfolded without her. Laughter, music, the simple camaraderie of shared existence—all tantalizingly close yet achingly distant. Tears welled in her eyes, tracing silent paths down her furred cheeks.

A decision loomed. To remain in the shadows, a ghost of the Fusion Wave's aftermath, or to brave the world anew, risking pain for the chance of connection. The path was uncertain, fraught with potential peril. But the human heart that now beat within her chest yearned for more than mere survival.

With a deep, shuddering breath, she rose, the city lights reflecting in her determined gaze. The journey ahead was hers to choose, hers to shape. And as dawn's first light crested the horizon, she had to make a choice.
