“That’s all settled then” said the detective. “Just sign here for you Jordan and here for you Sam and you can collect your belongings. I’m going to ask you to separate your own belongings from those of the twins which we will return to them”
Jordan signed then Sam followed suit. If the detective had looked closely he might have noticed the signatures were not a good match for the one’s on the drivers licenses. Fortunately the detective wasn’t paying attention. He was too busy removing the confiscated handbags and suitcases from a locker.
“So are the girls now free?” ‘Jordan’ asked as Detective Dave presented her with a handbag and the keys to Jordan’s car.
“I’ll contact the courthouse so the charges of kidnapping and car theft will be dropped. However the charge of driving unlicensed against Emma will still stand”
“So they will be released?”
“I should think so. Neither of the girls have any previous record. It’s a bit of a mystery actually. There is no record of the girls at all. Anyway, that’s the lawyer’s job. Bruce Wilson, the fellow who tracked you two down. I imagine he would be on his way to the courthouse now”
“Actually he won’t be. He asked me to let you know that a space has opened up at some cancer clinic in the Phillipines. Bruce is taking his wife there as a last resort” ‘Jordan’ regretted that she had forgot to relay the alibi for Bruce and Janet’s disappearance to Dave when ‘he’ had rung earlier when still in a male body. “They would be at the airport”
Dave grimaced. “I worry about Bruce. He has spent a fortune already trying to find a cure for Janet’s cancer. These quacks won’t leave him with anything. He’ll still be working here when he is ninety”
“I guess he really loves her” ‘Jordan’ said as she looked at ‘Sam’
“Well good luck to them. However if he’s no longer around I guess I had better get down to the courthouse and get your friends released. I assume you two will be heading there as well. It will make things go much smoother if you could post bail for Emma. Sometimes the judges are a bit loath to post bail when there is no fixed address”
“We really need ..” ‘Sam’ began, but ‘Jordan’ cut him off
“Of course. We can’t leave the girls rotting in jail. We can release them and take them to the resort they were headed to”
‘Sam’ gave her a dirty look, but didn’t argue. Janet knew Bruce didn’t like to leave clients in the lurch. He was still in love with Bruce, even if Bruce was currently a young woman called Jordan. It was true what Dave had said earlier. They had blown their life savings on trying to find a cure for Janet’s cancer.
So with the suitcases restored to the boot of Jordan’s car. They drove the car out of the police lot and followed the detective down to the courthouse.
