Pep talk

added 4 days ago O

You've managed to calm down a bit, but you still can't let go of the thought that you might get stuck at a size - or in a form - that keeps you from living your normal life, and while Dave's reassurance definitely helps to keep you from spiraling into despair, it's not enough to keep your worries away entirely.
However, since Roy still is busy scribbling down notes, there's not much to distract you, so you sit down on the floor and hug your knees.

Dave gives you a sad look, but doesn't say anything, so you try to ease his worries: "Look, it's not like I don't appreciate your help - heck, you just kept me from panicking, but I'd really like something more to go on than just good vibes and a positive outlook - I've been having lots of fun with my new, enhanced body, even if I wouldn't have picked it to be exactly like that if I had a choice, but it's just been several back-to-back surprises that all ranged from okay to shit, and I'd really like to feel in control again, or at least that I'm making some actual progress towards figuring myself out, you know?"

Dave sighs and nods. "Yeah, it's been slow, and as much as I'd like to tell you otherwise, I kinda expected that - as much as our nerd over here-" he nods towards Roy - "is smart and could build and program another ray gun from scratch in an hour flat, given the right materials, when he's stumped by something, I'd be willing to bet that I couldn't even begin to figure it out, and he sure had very little ideas about your condition besides the whole energy absorption thing you've got going on. On the positive side though, this isn't the first time he's trying to figure out something new, and from what I've seen previously, he's very thorough, so I'd also guarantee you that he will find out more and more about all of this - even if it might not always be the most straightforward way to get there.
Also, he's not the type to quit looking into things - unsolved mysteries are what interest him the most, especially if they're in any way related to shapeshifting or transformation, so you better not run off without warning after today, or he'll talk everyone's ears off to get them to find where you went."

You ruminate a bit on that thought - while it's basically a confession that they're still at a loss about things, it's also oddly reassuring to know that you'll only have to wait for them to figure things out. Hopefully they'll be able to do that without too many bad things happening, but as long as they're reversible, you'll take what you can get.

You smile softly. "Thanks, that actually helped - let's hope we'll find something we can do besides poking me with a ray gun to see what happens. It just sucks, this should be fun - heck, it's been fun, and exciting too - but then I just had to go and ruin it for myself. It would be great if I could just make myself smaller or something - not even by much, but just so I know I could do it if I get into trouble."

"Hey, if you actually were influencing every single transformation you've caused, you might actually be able to do just that! I wouldn't recommend trying that right now - don't want to have you blacking out again - but that's definitely something we should look into sooner rather than later - or at least as soon as we know how to make it safe for you."

Roy chooses this exact moment to finish writing down his notes and observations, and apparently he's been listening the whole time, he seamlessly joins the conversation. "Well, depending on how exactly you absorb and process morphogenic energy, you might have a lot to work with right now - as I stated previously, you've absorbed a bit more than twice the amount of energy we've marked down as causing excessive changes, so you've definitely been overloaded a bunch. Coincidentally, this threshold is also close to the minimum power we needed to cause noticeable changes in size in our experiments, so there's a chance that all of this energy just went towards accomplishing that, but if it didn't, you should have plenty of it stored to try and mess with your size some more. But we won't have to guess, that's what the high-fidelity sensor tool is for - please sit still for a moment - and Dave, would you help me bring it over here?"

They both run over to another one of the carts with a machine that looks too heavy to lift and roll it over to you. This one looks a lot more recognizable though - while you barely could make out what parts served which purpose on the big gun on wheels, this "sensor array" looks like someone crossed a satellite dish with a fancy analog antenna, specifically the ones that look like someone welded two rakes together with the teeth pointing away from each other.
Behind that is the usual mess of wires all the unfinished technology seems to have here, but some of it clearly leads to a console with buttons and a screen, and the rest goes down to the big, clearly marked battery below it.

Once again, there's lots of fiddling with buttons and settings, and Roy makes several thoughtful noises while setting things up, only to quickly shut off the device again right after pointing it at you.
"That's unexpected! Good thing I still have decent reflexes, could've damaged the device otherwise."

You feel apprehensive - another thing that didn't go the way they wanted it to. "Um, what exactly happened? Is it bad?"

"Oh, no, no, I just figured I'd start measuring on a level that'd be appropriate for measuring the charge of our guns remotely, but turns out, you have much more energy stored inside you. Should've figured as much, I've just blasted you with a lot more than that, but at least I didn't fry the electronics before I realized my mistake."

"Oh, so do you think I might be able to turn myself back?"

"That's hard to say - until I managed to confirm the hypothesis that you're actually storing at least some of the morphogenic energy you encounter, I neglected to take any detailed measurements, but if we compare the numbers from just after we tested other delivery vectors..."
Roy pauses while he keeps messing with the settings before re-activating whatever actually takes in the data.
"...with the results on this screen, you now seem to contain a bit more than twice the amount of energy you did before - mind you, you've also just about doubled your total mass, so it's a much smaller increase in proportion to that, but it's still an increase, and if your size actually influences how much you can store, that'd mean that shrinking yourself successfully should mitigate most of the effects of draining your energy reserves again."

You smile at him. "Well, I'm definitely ready to try - here goes nothing!"

With these words, you close your eyes and try to concentrate on the feeling you've had when interacting with this strange energy, and try to concentrate on getting smaller.
It takes you a while to even feel like you're getting somewhere, and you vaguely hear the two men pushing buttons and shifting things around, but eventually something happens.
