Milo gulped as he…well now she considered what her new name would be. This name would be with her for the rest of her life as a mermaid.
“You don’t have to decide now.” reassured Kara with warmth.
“No…” said Milo as she looked at the nurse who was ready to finish up the paperwork. “Let’s keep it simple, Milo becomes Mia.”
“Mia.” Said Kara as she bent down and kissed her girlfriend’s cheek.
“Alright, I will print off your ID.” Said the nurse “In the meantime please head to room 3B, there will be a short program to explain some changes you will face with your life in the sea.”
That was somewhat unexpected, the flier for the community talked about helping people adjust to their new mermaid/merman life. It made sense their would-be classes and programs but neither of them had thought of it that way.
Kara pushed Mia down the hallway toward room 3B. Kara moved down the short ramp into chest high water. Once down it was much easier for Mia to move since her legs were fused from almost the knee up. They moved in to find what looked to be a classroom with rows of tables with chairs which were under the water. The tables themselves sat only inches off the water.
They weren’t alone, it was about half full with mermaids and a couple of mermen. They were spread across the room.
“Welcome, we where about to start.” Said a fully transformed mermaid who sat slightly out of the water at the front of the classroom. She sat on a sort of artificial island; her neon green hair was impossible to happen naturally in a human and her tail was mixture of greens as well. She had fins on either side of her hips and a second smaller set slightly lower then her knees. She didn’t wear the transformation suit that everyone currently transforming had, instead she had a sort of corset which pushed her modest breasts up.
“Hello, I am Dr. Hellen and I am one of the specialists to help people come to grips with the changes going on with your bodies.” Explained Hellen “So I have a 30 minute presentation with a Q&A afterwards for those who wish to stay.”
What followed was both strange and illuminating as both Kara and Mia learned things they hadn’t even considered about life under the sea.
The bathroom talk was weird even as they all learned that it was generally the same as if they were human. The bloodless periods was welcomed news to every mermaid even if the explanation was that blood in the water brings sharks.
“For those mermaids who are on the busty side.” Said Dr. Hellen as she looked at the massive chest which now graced Mai’s chest. “Mermaids have a group of muscles under the skin which act like a natural bra so it isn’t as big of a pain on the back as it would be on land. It isn’t perfect so please wear bras or corsets when in the water ladies.”
“Well now we enter the Q&A part, so any questions?” inquired Dr. Hellen as she looked around the room. “You in the back?”
“What is food like?” inquired a mermaid. Kara turned to look at her, she seemed to be a shark mermaid, her mouth was full of razor-sharp teeth and had a fin on her back.
“Well we have fish of course, our “water” is a type of plankton and algae. The type also adds flavoring, example this green bottle beside me is basically a type of algae but when I drink it, it tastes like tea.” explained Dr. Hellen “Someone already figured out how to brew spirits and beer, so you all can enjoy the bars under the ocean. Coral and seaweed makes up your fruits and vegetables as well as grains. Now anyone else?”
“Yes, I have a question about marriages and families.” inquired a mermaid in the back. “With so many mermaids compared to mermen how does that work?”
“Well it is sort of the wild west currently.” Explained Dr. Hellen “There are of course people who stay with their partners they had on land; my wife loves me even though I am a mermaid now instead of the man she married. However, a growing number of mermaids and merman have formed poly relationships. I personally know of a group of twelve merfolk, three merman and nine mermaids whom have formed a poly relationship together.”
“Twelve?” inquired another mermaid stunned
“Yes, the number is high, so far the average seams to be 1 merman to 4 to 5 mermaids.” Explained Dr. Hellen “If that isn’t to your liking, some merman have started to rent themselves out as for the lack of a better term “studs” so that mermaid couples can have kids.”
“Wasn’t expecting that.” Mia whispered as Kara nodded her head, part of her wondering if her former boyfriend was now attracted to merman. “I really need a drink after this.”
“Agreed, lets go to the bar.” Said Kara as they left about halfway through the Q&A heading straight toward the bar.
