Jack took a deep breath and then opened his black envelope. He then stared at his new role with unbelieving eyes. But this was to be expected, right? Apparently, it was always something that turned people's lives upside down. He was no exception, it seemed.
"Well? What's it say?" his wife Laura asked.
"A bimbo housewife," he said.
"What's a bimbo?" his young daughter Chloe asked.
Jack cleared his throat, avoiding the question, then told his wife "Go on. Open it."
Laura was hesitant. Who wouldn't be? Then she finally opened her black envelope. She gasped, her eyes staring at the card she found inside.
"What is it?" Jack asked.
Laura looked at her husband, then back at her kids, then shook her head, wanting to deny what she saw, but knowing that like many others, she would eventually take on her new assigned role, no matter what. She leaned over towards her husband and whispered in his ear so that her kids couldn't hear. "A latex lesbian dominatrix."
"Oh my god," Jack uttered. He knew how Laura felt about lesbians, thinking they were perverts, but a dominatrix? That was so much worse. And latex? Truth be told, he actually got a little horny with the visual in his head of his wife dressed that way, but no way could something like that happen. She wasn't that type of woman. Or at least, not yet. His horniness went away the moment he thought of his sweet and loving wife, mother of two, being turned into a cruel dominator who only had sex with women. Wait, if he was going to be a housewife (a bimbo housewife), did that mean that he was going to be her housewife? A transgender housewife? He shuddered, wishing that none of this was happening. Sure, in that situation, they'd still be together, but only in a totally messed up way. He didn't want to become some bimbo transgender housewife and he didn't want his wife to become a lesbian dominatrix, but he knew that as much as they'd fight it, eventually, it would be who they'd become.
Lucas was already opening his black envelope. "Congratulations, you've been selected to change your life," he read off of the card that was inside the envelope. "Your new role is Victorian Goth girl." He looked up at his parents with an inquisitive look. "What's Victorian mean?" He got the rest of it. He thought Goths were weirdos and Goth girls were creepy. He didn't want to be a Goth. And he definitely didn't want to be a girl (or rather transgirl, he supposed).
Jack and Laura looked at each other, then at their daughter Chloe, thinking that maybe they should stop her. But they knew that it was inevitable. Once a black envelope was delivered, it would eventually be opened, one way or another. Chloe opened it and read her new role. "A womanizing jock." She looked up at her parents. "Womanizing ... does that mean I'll be a woman?"
Her parents shook their heads, in a daze. Their daughter was going to be some playboy jock who dated girls, then threw them away when she got bored with them? This was terrible. Not only was their daughter too young to date, she was a girl, not a boy. But as it would turn out, whatever was forcing these new roles on people would make it so that Chloe would fit her new role to a T, or at least as close as possible. The same went for the rest of the Thomson family.
