As Damon's belonging were taken away, his landlord, who was seldom truly honest, kept a few things. Damon's cash in his wallet and a few valuables. He figured no one would miss these or more accurately, no one would suspect him. He was very good at putting a kind and honest face in public. All the better to hide his traitorous nature when it came to money. He always found ways to swindle his tenants if he could and never gave back deposits. Looking at the lamp, he hoped the object was made of genuine gold and he wasted no time in trying to scrape it off. Yet of course while doing so he rubbed it and the genie appeared.
"How can I help you, o dear master?" she asked with all the sweetness she could muster in her voice.
The landlord was aghast at the beauty of the creature before him. Dimly he reflected that this being was probably the cause of his tenant's mysterious disappearance, he figured it was because Damon had been too stupid to think of a good wish or that he was gone in a better place, or under a much more profitable appearance. And profit was EXACTLY what he was looking for.
"How many wishes do I get? Three?" asked the landlord.
He did not even bother to be polite or introduce himself to the genie, but she showed none of her frustration at him. She would get her revenge soon enough. Glancing around his place and at papers she guessed he was the landlord. And like all of those, he loved money more than anything else. And he did not disappoint on this end. He immediately wished to be crazily, unbelievably rich.
"Of course," she beamed. "Your wish is my command."
She snapped her fingers and the landlord got his ill thought-out wish granted at once. The genie thought that these wishes were so easy to misunderstand on purpose. This man never detailed in what he would like to be rich, after all. It never got old... And this was only the first wish.
